I have a Sony VGN-A690 that won't log on. It would boot up and I could see my desktop. Right before I could see any icons, it logs out automatically. After that, I click on my username and it doesn't even attempt to log in at all. Before all of this, my computer would log in by itself because I never set a username or password. What would I need to do?

    Thanks.

You may have a virus or Windows is corrupted. I would say your best bet is to store your computer back to factory condition with your recovery CDs or load Windows in Safe Mode.

I've tried safe mode, but the same thing happens. Right now, I don't want to reformat the HD because there are things in there I don't want to lose.

Isn't there a repair function when you put in the recovery CDs? Give that a go :)

    Yes you would need it.

Or, worst case scenario - take our the hard drive, load the files onto another computer via USB cable and restore your entire system.

an easy way (which I have done before), is to boot an ubuntu live cd so that you can boot (linux os). then plug in a flash drive or external drive and copy all your important files on it. once everything you need is saved, do your recovery/restore.
you'll need to download the ubuntu .iso file and burn it to dvd on another computer.
