    Hey guys,

My audio disappeared and stopped working. it no longer shows in the device manager. installing the driver does nothing. my audio icon has a red x on it and when i click it it wants to detect problems (it doesn't work). what should i do? how should I diagnose the audio? I feel like this is hardware problem as it just happened out of the blue.

I am running Windows 8 (and have been for a while) using Andrew08's guide located here

    I updated the bios
    chipset drivers
took it apart and unplugged and replugged the audio board
    started in safemode
restored to a system restore point from a month ago.
*CLEAN INSTALL (per andrew 08's guide) still same problem. this is a hadware problem.

    none of these worked.

see as I think it is a hardware problem, does anyone know if this audio board has the actual realtek chip and not just the i/o? (so if i swap it out i will have audio again)

update: found this waiting for a reply from MikjoA. or anyone who knows!

    Thanks guys!

    Update:
see last post: Replacing the ribbon cable model number FPC-197 1-881-486-11 fixed the issue.

MikjoA I tried to message you back but your inbox is full.

if you already swap the board, let try swap the cable if you can.
in addition, do you see audio device in Device Manager?

unfortunately, I don't have an extra cable. The audio device does not show under the device manager. however the USB power and the HDD that use the same cable are functioning properly.

Usb power and HDD are working properly doesn't mean the cable is fine since data line for each device is separately. It could be data line or power line for audio board on the cable has been broken.
