I can answer any questions you have about it if you have specific ones. You planning on using their Trade up and Go Pro 4 program?

    www.sony.com/gopro4

I know of tons of people who's used it and gotten their full rebate back easily and quickly.

It depends on the Dell Laptops... Approximatley a year ago, i was able to get 200 dollars for a Centrino Pentium M 1.4ghz, 256mb of Ram, 14 inch, Thinkpad R series. The battery didn't hold a charge, so i assumed they would give me 150...but i took it to the sony outlet, and they pretty much on the spot gave me 200. So if your dell's are comparable...that will be 800 bucks, give or take. This can get you a new NS or CS series notebook...

But, i went on the webpage recently and now for a 1.86ghz, 1 gb of ram, 15 inch, thinkpad R52, x300 radeon graphics, i would ONLY GET 89 dollars. The sad thing is, that R52 was alittle over a year newer than my previous thinkpad, so youd think id get a similar amount, but this is not so...

    thebigpants27,

If you are using their Trade Up and Go Pro 4 program you'd get $300 for it. The SR series qualifies for the trade in program.

I've used it before when they were offering $600 for any Sony laptop. It worked great and got my check without any problem.

Nixon, go pro only applies to very specific laptops... but either way i was actually trading in that thinkpad a while ago for a ps3...so it wouldnt have applied to my case...

Jealous here, because they now offer $300 or "fair market value", whichever is greater. My lappy is in great shape, and 1 year old, but the preliminary website quote only fetched $300. How long ago did you get that deal, and any speculation whether it will be offered again?

You would be better of if you just sell your laptop at eBay. It is an insult for Sony to offer $300 for my SZ. Give me a break  $300 would only get you the hard drive and RAM.

I think it was about 2 years ago. Their promo was for any Sony laptop. I had one from 2000 (N505 superslim), which sells for about $100 on ebay back then. It was a super deal, but of course you have to buy a new Sony in order to receive the money.

Their current promo is for eligible Dell, $450. I suppose you can find a cheap Dell laptop on ebay that qualifies and send that in as the upgrade computer. I don't know if the promo will ever come back for Sony. I still have 2 that I am ready to let go =)

I recently bought a Vaio VGN-SR190 CTO, and I can't find it at all in their trade up list -- should I assume that CTO's don't qualify, or is there some special lingo they use? I would love to get rid of this Thinkpad T41p for $300 towards my laptop.

AFAIK, CTO doesn't qualify, you have to buy pre-configured -- but it accepts preconfig model being customized by vendor like PortableOne (like putting a 320 GB 7200 RPM HDD instead of the original).

The deal was really great two years ago with $600 for ANY Sony laptop, now it's $300 and it limits you to trade-in a laptop with at least Pentium 4 in it.

does anyone know for sure whether CTO does NOT qualify?

edit: sony support said CTO does not qualify. i emailed them and this is what they said

"Currently, the Sony Trade Up & Go Pro 4 Promotion is designed for trading in eligible pre-owned notebook and purchase a new eligible Sony VGNBX700, VGN-SZ, VGN-TX or VGN-TZ Series model. The purchase item is not eligible if it is not listed on our website. We regret that the Sony VGNZ590CTO is not an eligible purchase for this promotion. "
