    rep+ for ya~

I have a Sony TZ150N/B on the way and is looking forward to swap the DVD out for a 2.5" SSD. Or vice versa if 2.5" is not an option

BTW, who is this P1 and do they have a retail site? thx

I emailed Ivan and he told me that you wouldn't be able to send your TZ to them and have it swapped out, Sony's really adamant about that, you have to order your TZ from them and have them do the swap and they'll also include the DVD drive.

um... isn't sony style already offer SSD / HDD combo on their TZ198? what is the point if they don't sell the mounting hardware individually? I guess we have to wait a little longer.. eventually these parts will be aavailable through other channel

No, it's for the other models that Portable One and Sony sell, the 195s, etc. This allows you to put a second hard drive in any model, which is what you can get from Japan through Dynamism, but not here in the U.S.

This is a totally cool development, because now Ivan has opened up the TZ for customization. The TZ is turning out to be the biggest hit of 2007 at the rate its development is going! :D

As a proponent of the small laptop, I'd like to believe this, and my enthusiasm like Ubercool's sometimes makes me think so, but.... look at the statistics along the left side of the forum.notebookreview.com website -- TZ doesn't rank on the main screen and on the Sony forum it's below the SZ, FZ, CR, NR, AR, and N models.... a distant 7th.

Oh well -- I'm sure $$ is part of it -- but sooner or later most of us laptop/notebook users get tired of hauling the pounds around. I know that, after buying my first TZ and experiencing its delightful form factor and weight, I quickly sold my T60p which up to then I'd assumed was my mainstay for the next couple of years. These things are addictive! ...especially since you don't really lose much computing power over what the other "big guys" offer, unless you're really into gaming.

I don't even need an ultraportable, but once I first saw the Vaio TR at Fry's almost four years ago, I was hooked, and just can't stand the "normal, monster" laptops. Anything bigger than 12"? Ewwwwww. ;)

Well, Ivan did tell me he could only do it for TZs bought from PortableOne, still better than nothing. Can't wait to see how the TZ198 is that you're getting tomorrow Bruce.

From where did you ordered Bruce? Portable One is not shipping in Europe eh? So, if I understood good you will be able to put another HD in the place of the optical drive and back again, whenever you want?

This is what Ivan said to me.
    -----------------------
"Warranty stays intact; but hard drive mod has to be handled by us, which is 3 years even if machine only has 1 year ;-)

And you get the optical drive too; you just have to unscrew the optical drive from machine to swap with HD."
    -----------------------

I don't think swapping the HDD and optical drive is nearly that easy, I wish it was.

I bit the bullet and paid the outrageous price at SonyStyle.com -- including sales tax

Had one on order through Chris Coalpit in Nova Scotia (ebay: colpic) but turned out he could only ship it via the postal system which I don't trust to arrive in my university office. Would have been considerably less expensive though.

One of the selling plusses for the TZ198, at least for me, is the external DVD burner that connects via the iLink port -- for the number of times I use a DVD unit this will be fine, even though it means having to take it with me. I prefer the hybrid SSD+200G HDD (would have liked a 7200rpm HDD rather than 5400, though).

I have found several websites that sell necessary TZ parts to complete this conversion (CD/DVD ROM to 2.5" HDD). Unfortunately, none of them include picture and only part numbers.

If someone could find the part # for these three items. We could probably do this conversion for less than $100

    See picture attached. http://www.bestclickshopping.com/misc/vaioparts.jpg

    1. RED, extra USB module with ZIP ribbon.
    2. BLUE, 2.5" HDD mount plate with screws.
    3. GREEN, Right side plastic cover.
