I have a Vaio FW490. I took it with me on vacation. When I realized that the LCD TV in the place I am staying had an HDMI connection, and that there was no blu ray player, I decided to connect my laptop to the TV via the HDMI. I had no problem with the video, once I discovered that I needed to shut off the laptop display. The sound was fine for all of the various previews on the Blu ray dvd. But once it started playing the movie, which was in DTS 5.1 audio, there was no sound. It played sound when I chose the directors comments, but I was unable to get any sound when the dts track was chosen. This occurred with 2 blu ray movies. I checked my sound settings while the hdmi was connected and it showed "digital audio HDMI (ATI HDMI audio) as the default device.
Is it just not possible to play a blu ray dvd from my laptop to a TV via hdmi only? Do I need a separate audio connection?

Try to download the latest driver from realtek.com, not from Sony.
Download the latest version of WinDVD BD for VAIO from Sony. -
Hi
I found the following drivers for my laptop on the Sony support site:
1) Realtek® High Definition Audio Driver 11/18/2009 6.0.1.5886 98.49 MB
2) Realtek® HDMI High Definition Audio Driver 10/08/2009 6.0.1.5897 9.36 MB
2) Realtek® ATI HDMI Audio Driver 10/06/2009 6.0.1.5880 9.22 MB
My FW490 has the following drivers installed:
1) Realtek high definition audio driver 6.1.1.5886 dated 7/2/2009. Should I assume that this matches whats on the Sony site, although the driver dates are different?
2) Realtek ATI HDMI Audio Driver 6.1.1.5897 dates 7/17/2009.
Other than a blutooth driver, these are the only 2 audio drivers on my ststem. Yet Sony lists 3 drivers. Are 2 and 3 basically the same device but different versions? I wenrt to the Realtek site, and they specifically suggest downloading drivers listed on the PC manufacturers site. They then list several Windows 7 drivers ( I am running Winnodws 7 home premium 64 bit). Which driver would you recommend I download? -
As I said, don't download audio drivers from Sony. They are outdated. Download High Definition Audio Driver directly from realtek http://www.realtek.com/downloads/ . They update their drivers at least once a month. Sometimes twice a month. Their drivers are much newer than Sony.
After downloading the audio drivers from realtek, download the latest patch for WinDVD BD from Sony. -
Thanks for your patience. I have looked at the various drivers on the realtek site and am not sure which to download:
Here is what I think applies to my Windows 7 64 bit system:
1) Vista, Windows7 Driver(32/64 bits) Driver only (Executable file) R2.39 2009/12/15 52860k
2) ATI HDMI Audio Device R2.39 2009/12/15 17435k
3) Vista, Windows7 Driver(64bits) Driver only (Executable file) R2.39 2009/12/15 30130k.
I am not sure which driver I should download and install.
Thanks again. -
So I downloaded and installed the latest drivers from the Realtek site, and verified that I had the latest patch for windvd on my system. I am still unable to hear anything when I try to play a blu ray in DTS 5.1 on my FW490, when connected to the TV via HDMI. I followed the instructions that on the Sony site, via your link, but when I get to HDMI properties/supported formats, I don't see anything at all like panel 4 on the instructions. There is no option on my screen (when connected via HDMI) that lets me choose different suppoorted formats. I am only able to change sample rates. Am I out of luck?

Having the exact same problem with my Vaio. Any help would be appreciated.

Download PowerDVD 9 Ultra 30-Day Trial Version from http://www.cyberlink.com/downloads/trials/powerdvd/download_en_US.html
If it fixes your problem, the problem is with your software player. -
Thanks, but I think I'll pass on the Pwerdvd 9 suggestion. I've read some negative user reviews.
