I had an issue with my clock not keeping time accurately. It was the CMOS battery. I took it in to the SonyStyle store for exchange about 3 weeks ago.

Finally their next shipment and my replacement arrived today.

I noticed a few things, my old screen had very slight yellowish tint noticeable with lighter colors on the bottom left corner.

My new screen is uniform on both sides with no tint. Did anyone else have this issue?

Next thing I noticed is my spacebar works no matter where I tap it.

I can tap it on the VERY far left and right with a letter opener and it still works.

    Here's a VIDEO

Interesting video. I gotta try to tap my sz with a letter opener when I get home and see if it responds the same way (I have a "first batch").

I'll try this as well on mine as well. I got my SZ160 about a month ago, and I've noticed that the spacebar is much more responsive than the SZ110 that I bought and returned before. The SZ120's spacebar would interfere with my normal typing it was so inconsistent in registering...

UPDATE: I tried the "letter opener" test, and I'm sorry to report - I FAILED... Good thing I don't type with my letter opener... haha

IT's good to hear that they fixed a few of these problems....

I am planning to get a SZ120 this weekend......I am from Canada....I wonder if I should get it from a local sony store or on sonystyle.ca......

do you think the sony store would have these new fixes??......

Local Sony Store. Thats where I got mine's. Much nicer to get it as you can always go back with your bill and just give it back for fixing. Plus you will get it at that second rather then waiting a week to two weeks.

I just tried this, and pressing at the same spot where you pressed didn't register any action. The right side is also inconsistent.

How can you even hit the spacebar on the far edge during normal typing? Unless your hands are incredibly small, I've not been able to do that one time during this entire reply and I'm even TRYING to hit it there.

Just as a test...it should register no matter what part of the spacebar you press.

Anyways it's the left side that has the problem and I seem to always hit the space bar with my right thumb so it isn't really a problem for me.

I am VERY annoyed now. I will be contacting sony for a replacement laptop. This problem has quite an effect on me as I do a lot of programming and I'm always finding spaces have been missed and I get compiler errors.

(I normally strike the space bar with my left or right thumb)

I had a SZ140 with the keyboard issue. I used a bit of tape in-between the key and the switch. I later switched to a SZ150 and it does not have the space bar issue.

The letterhead opener was just to prove a point. My old SZ wouldnt register consinstantly even with my thumb.

I had read multiple complaint here, so I just wanted to let people know who may have returned their laptop, or not bought one becuase of this issue.

Mine (SZ110) wont register the key if i dont move my left-thumb like 1 inch to the inner-side. I have no problems with my right thumb though.

Mine will be heading back to sony to get a new keyboard. I just got off the phone with tech support a little while ago. My experience with them was good. I called for a nother problem, and 1st level of support sent me to a specialist. After getting the problem resolved, I mentioned the space bar problem. After describing the problem, she made arrangements to ship it to them and have the keyboard looked at, probably replaced. I'll post when it comes back.

Does anyone know how new the machines (build date) have to be for the spacebar to be fixed? Or possibly a serial number range? Also, is it only fixed on certain models (SZ110, SZ150, etc)? Or is it fixed on all SZ models? Personally I have an SZ120P from CompUSA and I don't want to have to go back and exchange it unless I can be sure that the new one has the fixed space bar.

    Thanks,
    Dan

I have a similar problem with the yellowish tint in the lower right hand corner of my screen- additionally it seems that my screen is not as bright as it was when purchased (about one month ago). Has anyone else noticed a depletion of screen brightness?

    thanks,

    gordo

It could be that your eyes are just getting used to the screen.

BlackG35, Can you - or anyone with a new SZ- confirm what has changed in the new batch ?

I had my doubts that Sony is delaying it to replace keyboard, fix up monitor, ..etc, but had to confirm it ... i do plenty of coding on my keyboard myself and the space bar issue does give me a bad day .. only problem i got mine at J&R and i guess their return policy is : send back to Sony ! not sure if i can wait a couple of weeks just to get same unit

One other thing, I tried an HP dv5000 and I must say that its BrightScreen screen was brighter and more 'defined' than the one on my SZ160 - the one I have looks pale even compared to an old HP NX7000 I have .. is it just me or is the screen really not that good ?

BTW, Love your car bro, was about to get one but I got a silver 325i at the last minute .. I love Infinity..

    Peace

    I've got the spacebar issue too (sz1xp == europe(sz160)). for a 2500+ machine, it's very disappointing.
    just my 2c...
