I have used speedfan before on my desktop and old dell 600m. Now I am trying to get it to work on my Z540/VistaB32. When I run the program the fan icon appears in the tray but nothing else happens and I cannot access features or even kill it. I have to use task manager to stop it. BUT, if I run the program again it starts up completely normal- reads sensors, displays temps, and can open and configure options. Seems very strange. Does anyone have any secret to get it to run properly on the first shot?

You need to run SpeedFan in elevated mode (right-click, run as Administrator) but you will still not be able to control fan speeds. I would also like to make my fan quieter but didn't find any way yet. Installing Windows 7 helps a bit but it's not an ultimate solution.

Dang six days to get a response!
I actually made some progress. Runs first time now by setting it to XP compatibility mode. Still no fan control or speed display.

You won't get any fan control on a Vaio. It is locked down by Sony.
