    I have 2 laptops:

    Sony Z 555DN:
    Vista business
    2.6 ghz (P8600)
    3gb DDR3 ram
    250 gb drive
    geforce 9300 gs

    And a Compal HGL30:
    WIndows xp 32bit
    1.6 ghz (T5500)
    1.5gb ram
    100gb HDD
    geforce 7600 go

My problem is that they run games at the same speed (the HGL30 actually runs them SLIGHTY faster) Ive tested this on Left 4 dead and fallout 3. I bought the Sony Z because of its weight and durability, but most importantly, for gaming. However, its almost the same speed as the HGL30 which is almost 2 years old! Yes i know, the sony Z is in a class of its own but...

Are there any tunes up that I can do to get more juice out of the sony? Would switching it to XP make a large performance difference? I'd rather not return the sony (because I got a decent deal on the floor model), but at the same time, if its just as fast, I think I'd rather lug around the HGL30 instead...

Please let me know what you all think!

I'm not sure what model the 555DN translates to. If it's a 1600x900 model, I'm not surprised.
IMO, the high-res Z is unusable for gaming, unless you can find a game that can run in exactly half the resolution of the screen (i.e. 800x450). I still haven't found a single game that it runs at an acceptable frame rate in 1600x900, even with all graphical settings turned to a minimum.
The interpolation effects of running in other resolutions makes it a non-option (text becomes blurry and unreadable, for example). Perhaps if hooked up to a CRT, some older games will work OK.

For gaming, use a gaming PC. The Z isn't one. Gaming isn't mentioned in the marketing material at all, I believe. It's a great machine, but not for gaming.
