Is there any instant-on solution like Splashtop for a Vaio Z that can be installed retroactively?

    http://www.prestomypc.com/

It's based on Xandros and supposedly boots in seconds and shuts down that way too. I haven't tried it, but might be exactly what you're looking for.

That's not instant on, though. It's a fast-booting distro that is started through the Windows boot manager. And much of the wait time is before getting to the Windows boot manager.

An instant-on system is one that will load through UEFI before the boot -- preferably just loading a memory dump of a running system from nvram. Good systems load in the time it takes to open the lid. If you're going to wait for 30 seconds, you might as well wait for 60.

This is true, or I guess even just leave the laptop on standby as it doesn't use a lot of power.

Right, but its better then nothing, cause that's his other option. :p

If it saves a few minutes when you just wanna check something then it might be good enough.

A fast-booting distro on a USB stick should be fairly similar.

But as one of the others said, sleep instead of shutdown might be an even better option.
