I wish I could say that I'm the poster boy for having XP running well on an SZ4 (in spite of Sony's refusal to support Windows XP for this model). Unfortunately, when I try to use Standby or Hibernate my computer blue-screens and reboots.
The error message that I get is:
STOP: 0x000000EA
THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER
After checking online, I determined that this error usually has to do with the video drivers.
Does anyone else who's installed XP on an SZ4 have similar problems? I tried uninstalling my current video drivers and reinstalling with ones from the SZ3 driver pack from ftp.vaio-link.com, but it's always the same problem.
I'd love to hear any suggestions or possible solutions to this problem!
Cheers,
- Clifford

Hi Clifford,
I'd reply on the SZ4/XP thread but since you asked here as well, I'd say that I don't have your problem.
My machine has no problems going into standby or hibernation.
What is extremely irritating though is that my power management doesn't send the computer into these states automatically. (i.e. If I set it to sleep in 5 mins, it doesn't.) I have to explicitely command the computer to do so either with the start menu or by pressing my power button. -
try the more 2Gb hibernate fix

Hi harbars, thanks for the suggestion. I tried it out, but the computer still crashed when it went into hibernate.
I wish that I could trade problems with whwtan... My computer will happily attempt to standby or hibernate after a given period of time, based on whatever power profile I choose. Of course, when it does that, it'll just crash and reboot...
What seem so strange to me is that, according to other crash reports online, my error message appears to be the result of my video card drivers. It's odd then that both video cards in this computer, with a completely different set of drivers, would give me the exact same error message.
I know it seems outlandish, but I wonder if it's not the built-in camera that's causing this problem. Does it show up in Device Manager on other people's SZ4 XP installations as "Imaging Devices > USB Video Device"? If not, what does it show up as in your Device Manager? -
Using device manager - try to disable all HW.
like PCMCIA/LAN/Camera/Sound etc....
and then turn them on one by one.
(and try to HIB/STDBY)
my 2 cents,

Hi Numnum,
Thanks for the advice! This is exactly what I should have done in the first place.
After disabling/reenabling, it turns out that it was the modem. Sheesh! Of all things! I don't think that I've used a modem even once in the last 8 years... Actually, it's pretty good news that it was the modem -- now I've got an SZ4 running XP with everything working except for the camera and the modem. For my purposes, this is perfectly fine.
For the record, my modem is listed under device manager as:
"HDAUDIO SoftV92 Data Fax Modem with SmartCP"
It was installed either from the SZ4 driver pack the SZ3 one off of the vaio-link FTP site.
Thanks for all the help everyone! Best of luck with your SZ4 XP installs!

Hi clifford,
*laugh* Now that you've gotten your power management woes out of the way, perhaps you can tell me how you managed to get your machine to go into standby without forcing it. -
Hi whwtan, I'll try to help, but I should preface this by saying that I had this type of feature working right from my initial flurry of driver and utility installations on the night that I installed XP.
First of all, what else is not working on your computer? Do you have the VAIO Control Center installed on your computer? Do your S1 and S2 keys work? Do your Fn keys work? I may be wrong, but I suspect that all of these types of things may be linked to each other and to advanced power management...
