    Hi.

I have a problem. I have a Sony VAIO FZ-190 and it's been acting up. I formatted it yesterday to install Vista Home Premium (the guy before me had XP on it). When I turn on the computer there are vertical stripes after the initial "VAIO-screen". It starts up in normal mode only if I don't install the video card driver for my nVidia GeForce 8400M GT (and yes, I've tried different drivers, also the ones from laptopvideo2go.com). And there are still stripes on the screen.

If I install the video card driver, it loads Vista for 15 seconds and then stops. Then I get the bluescreen and it restarts and I can only start up in Safe Mode. It's very confusing. Especially since it didn't happen until I installed Vista. And I can see it on the very part of the startup-process. Could this a BIOS problem?

The pictures below shows the process (the last one is without the video card driver. See the red stripes?).

The stripes are an indication of a failed Nvidia chip, unfortunately. If you see them at the initial VAIO screen, the OS has nothing to do with it. Look elsewhere here for threads about failed Nvidia chips. It is a know issue as far as Nvidia is concerned, but one that Sony still has their head in the sand about.

Connect an external monitor and see if you still get those stripes. If you do, then it's the nVidia chip breaking down. If you don't, then it's a problem with the LCD itself.
