I researched on the internet for a SSD drive that will work in my VGN-TX27GP.

I used the Kingspec KSD-ZF18.1-128MJ. The MJ version of the drive is apparently faster than the MS version although the MJ version reportedly has some incompatibility problems with some laptops but I found it to work correctly with my vaio.

The internal Hitachi drive measured approximately 14mb/s sequential read and write before I installed the SSD. The SSD measured 80mb/s sequential read and 30mb/s sequential write. Measured with Crystal disk mark. The write speed is lower than that specified by Kingspec, but I have read somewhere that it is a problem with the sony motherboard that results in the lower speed.

When I installed the SSD I had some problems with the sony vaio ribbon cable. The cable was too thick to be able to go into the Kingspec SSD Zif connector. I measured the ribbon cable that came with the Kingspec and it was 0.21mm on the one side and 0.25mm on the other side. The vaio ribbon cable was 0.3mm.

I then used my dremel and a sanding bit to take off some of the kapton plastic on the back side of the sony connector. I reduced the thickness to about 0.24mm. At 0.25mm it still didn't want to go in properly. It went in but the drive was not recognised. I then reduced it even more and after that the drive worked perfectly. I have to note this was not a simple procedure and great care should be taken when sanding back of the vaio ribbon cable.

I am very pleased with the drive, word 2010 starts in less than 2 seconds. Excel starts in approximately 1 second. Firefox starts in 2 seconds. It is a huge improvement over the stock drive, the stock drive took almost half a minute or more for firefox to start, sometimes even longer.

Note: Sony vaio VGN-TX27GP is similar to the VGN-TX770P
