Hi All, Vaio PCG-8A2L. Switch on, fans run for few seconds then shut down. Hard drive runs but no activity. Nothing on the screen. Battery charges and the left yellow led glows. Hold the on/off switch down for 4 secs, it switches off.
    Any suggestions please.

Have you tried hooking the laptop up to an external display to see if you get a picture on it? If you do, it could be a loose connection between the video card and the LCD, a bad inverter, or a bad LCD.

If you get nothing on the external display you can try resetting your BIOS settings, which can be done on some models by removing the battery and unplugging the AC and holding the Power button down for about 30 seconds. If you have more than one stick of RAM you can try running off each one individually to see if they're somehow keeping the system from booting up properly. If that doesn't work, it could be a bad video card since it has no display but the system does clear some of its POST. It might also be a problem with the motherboard.

I'd discount a power problem because the system is getting enough power to come on, but the LCD isn't showing anything. That usually means there's an issue getting the LCD on or nothing is being sent to it from the laptop. As long as you can run the system off the AC adapter alone with the battery removed, the adapter is working.
