    Hi there,

I am using Sony Vaio SZ. My operating system crashed, When I start my computer, it shows the following message. error: loading operating system. I know I can format and reinstall factory settings if I click F10 at startup. But I first want to save my files. Can I start MS DOS than copy files to external drive or is there any other way? Please advise, I have all my files in that laptop, I am having headaches.

You could get a Linux Live CD and boot from that and recover what you can or get an external enclosure, transfer your HDD to it, then recover what you can.

Have you tried doing a System Recovery using a Windows Vista DVD? This will replace most essential system files in case they have been corrupted, and usually fixes boot issues.

+1 for linux unbuntu live CD really easy , but if you will use a usb memory drive for backing up your data be sure to safely remove it before connecting it to linux

I have an external hard drive that has enough space to store all my files in it. But my operating system is not running how will I transfer my files in it?

Oh ok, I get it now. Live CD! I will spend my night on that.
