    THE NEW "NEW" FW

I have been looking at various Sony vaio pics and there seems to be a case change at some point! This is a major difference between Sony FW's so listen up. The bottom of the case of the FW is thicker at the bottom, particularly where the hard drive sits. I have noticed that new FW’s have appeared at my local PC world supporting the new thicker style. This maybe to do with the cooling of the notebook, as it may be just giving components more of an air gap.

I believe that this FW is one of the New "NEW" Vaio models supporting the thicker style, “an air gap model!” I hope I get the more up to date thicker model as I don’t want my notebook running hot, or being the trial model. Probably before they found out that something was wrong  any ideas. Below clearly shows two pics of the different Vaios.

The old model I think !

    The new model !

And here below shows the design of the new flat base, rather than the old one where the hard drive sits down from the notebook. This is similar to my Hp dv2000, and plays part to the HHD getting pretty hot, 40-49 deg C idle! :(

I wonder if I will get a new model as ordered below ??

Is this really a design difference? Or does it just appear that way since the pictures were taken at different angles?

exactly, the images posted are not the same angle, one is more front the front whereas the other is more from the top, therefore the angle is different and the thickness of the front is different.

There is a difference in the thickness. I noticed this as well when I was researching the different models. Here are two pictures from Newegg. The picture with the "hump" is the VGN-FW190EEH and the picture without the hump is the VGN-FW170J/H. I believe the difference has to do with the 7200rpm hard drive being either thicker or requiring more room to breath...

But that is just for the hdd, the only difference is that the cover for the harddrive is larger and therefore sticks out, to make the entire lid thicker would require retooling the factory that makes it, and that would cost a bit of money to do.

Perhaps the design was changed for the centrino 2 models vs the non centrino 2 models.

Not quite, all the new Vaio models are Centrino 2.

well the ones shipped initially could not be designated as centrino 2 due to them lacking the intel wireless card.

FZ also has 2 different models. FZ CTO has raised access panel.

while pre-configured FZ has flat access panel.

If you notice, the one with raised access panel has thinner rubber foot, which makes its overall thickness identical to the one with flat access panel.

It looks so much better flat I think! I don’t now yet for sure but I think there may have been some changes to the base plastic on the new "new model" ! I’ve only ever seen it once and that was at PC world! The older style gets very thin near the front of the notebook, but then has the stupid bit for the hard drive to go! The new model does not have this bit, but I think is slightly thicker at the front to compensate for the hard drive and still have a flat base!

I couldn’t find any pictures showing them both from the side/ same angle, and flat to the floor. This is a unusual shot unless you were going to get pictures of the ports. Things never look as good square on :D

I’m wondering if the thicker model does not have the problem where buy the touch pad was getting very warm during use, the one I tried out had a very cool touch pad!
