I am thinking about replacing my large 17" sager notebook with an ultraportable sony notebook for school.

Is there a noticable difference in build quality and anything else between the TX and TZ series? Aside from the obvious difference in Core Duo vs 2 Duo, is the TX considerably slower for non-processor intensive use?

The TX on ebay on on this forum used I could get for around 900-1000 but the TZ is around 600+ more for the cheapest model, is the upgrade to TZ worth the extra money? and if so why?

TZ improves upon everything from the TX except for battery life. If you are worried about cost TXN is the model you should get. Durablitly wise the TXN has the slight edge based on just the keyboard doesnt show wear as much as the TZ. But Im more partial to the TZ although I loved my TXN when I had it

    TX Pros:

    • Smooth, silver keyboard that won't wear down from use and no glossy surface surrounding the keyboard like the TZ (So it needs less cleaning/maintenance cosmetically wise)
    • Better battery life (at least on the newer Core Solo models)
    • Slightly smaller dimensions
    • Dedicated hardware volume and mute buttons vs FN buttons on TZ

    TZ Pros:
    • Better screen, better color reproduction
    • Option for 1.8" SSD (solid state drive)
    • Option for 2.5" HDD (in place of the DVD drive)
    • Slightly thinner and lighter
    • Core 2 Duo processors

Yes, the newer models with Core Solo vs Pentium M processor in the older models have noticably better battery life, I hear at least 1 hour extra.
