I just purchased a new TX850 which is a fantastic machine in every possible way except one. I discovered that the optical drive (a Mat****a UJ-832D) can read CDs but will not recognize any DVD media - either blank DVDs or DVD movies. The drive spins for around 10-15 seconds attempting to read the disc but neither WinDVD nor Windows Media recognize that there is a DVD in the drive.
A quick search on the forums shows that the SZ uses the same drive and several owners have experienced the same problems.
Is this a dead optical drive or is it a driver issue? I've tried re-installing/updating the driver but no luck.
Any ideas?

I can't see how it would be a driver issue on a brand new machine. If you bought it locally, I'd suggest you exchange it. I, too, just got a new TX850. I absolutely love this little machine and am burning recovery DVD's at this very moment (I'm writing this on a different computer).
I hope you get this figured out and/or get an exchange for a working unit. I can imagine how bummed you must be. -
Well, it turned out to be a hardware problem - specifically the optical drive cable was defective. I'm having the drive replaced instead of swapping for a new machine because the unit is perfect in every other way.
I highly recommend buying all Sony laptops from Ivan at Portable One. They are simply fantastic when it comes to dealing with these kinds of problems.
I'm glad you love your TX850. It's quite an amazing little machine.
