Hi, the fan on my tx850p seems to constantly be on, pluggined in or otherwise. the previous 850p i had, which had a manufacture date of one month before this one, i recall wasnt so bad with fan usage but this one is consistently blowing out hot air. ive even set the power settings to batterylife cpu control, turned off usb, ilink etc ports, yet the fan is always whining. i think the fan is on the left sie of the notebook.
also notebook seems to heat up more than i remember my previous one to.

anything i can do about this? am i jsut having selective paranoid memory?
also, in pwoer settings fan control option is greyed out in the un-plugged power setting. dies this have something to do wiht sonys paranoia about exploding battery and its thus making my battery life suffer??

someone help, its driving me crazy.

Check the processor temperature, because it may be that which is cahsing the fan to be constantly on. Use a program like NHC (notebook Hardware Control) or Speedfan to see what it is. It may be a good idea to clean out the notebook, because if it is a few months old, then dust build up me a reason why the fan is on.

No your not crazy, I have a TX790P and the fan kicks on shortly after Windows boots up and it never ever ever shuts off for even a millisecond, no matter what settings I apply to the computer. This is my biggest complaint of the TX series :(

My TX850 is just the opposite, the fan does not come on very much at all. If I'm doing word processing, it stays off the whole time, if I'm viewing my photos, it goes on every so often, if I'm watching a DVD, it goes on and off pretty much regularly. It is never on all the time.

ok so firstly, waht is the normal temperature for the cpu once i manage tog et a reading on that. and if its above normal, what do i do? eveyrone here knows how sony support is. jsut giving them my laptop means theres a 50% chance it'll iether come back unfixed, or come back with an even bigger problem than before. but that ofcourse assumes sony actually thinks it IS a problem. thye might just say uhh not really a problem the fan is meant to be on so frek off. now how do i deal with this?

secondly, how do i clean the computer? there acutally is alot of dust in my apt, and alot of times i use it on my bed, or on a table that might not be the cleanest surfaces possible. so maybe this does have soemthing to do with it. any tips?

    thanks

That dust layer is most likely the problem. Using your notebook on a bed is not advisable, as it blocks vital vents, and causes the notebook to quickly become hot. If you meaure your processor temperature, anything above 65 or 70 C should cause the fan to come on. Anything higher than 75 C, and it can cause some instability, but if it was, then you would have been experiencing crashes. Start with removing the dust layer the best you can without opening the notebook, as this may void your warranty. Sony may class the warranty void if they find that the notebook has been tampered with, so be careful. Other manufacturers are less critical on their warranty.
