Hello everybody,
Im new to the forum, so please excuse me if this question was answered before. Recently I bought a VAIO VGN-TXN15, and cant decide about efficiency of the memory upgrade.
The TXN15 has 1GB in two 512MB sticks; one soldered to the board, and one replaceable, up to 1.5 GB total.
However, when there are two equal 512MB sticks, the Intel chipset works in dual-channel RAM mode, effectively doubling the memory bandwidth. If I replace the accessible stick with 1GB, the memory controller will work as a single channel.
So, my question is: does memory upgrade to 1.5 GB make sense? Does it make the notebook faster or slower? If anybody has a personal experience with the upgrade, or has a spare 1GB to test, it would be very interesting to learn the results.
Sorry for the long post and thanks!

That's a really good question and I hope someone has the answer. I have the TX850 so would be facing the same concerns as you are should I decide to upgrade to 1.5G.

I think it's a must for extra Ram when upgrading to Vista...otherwise...I'm sure the difference is negligible.
-
The performance boost by dual channel is not that big. Extra memory is always better.
-
My TX seems peppier with 1.5 gigs.
-
A little quicker, but you will mostly notice the difference when multitasking.
-
I read some articals say that dual channel doesn't work on TX.
On XP, I don't know if it will load more stuffs into the extra ram first to reduce loading from hard drive.
On Vista, the extra ram really helps. -
Dual channel does not require 2 equal size chips.

The 945GMS chipset that the TX has does not support dual channel (imho, not that it would make that big of a difference).

When TZ will arrive to US, your TXN25 will have a little accident again? -
