    Hi,

I'm running Vista on a TZ pared back to pretty much the bare minimum, minus Norton, Classic View, etc.

When I try to drag and drop a file - any file - within the Explorer window, it crashes with an error and I have to reopen Explorer again. This only happens when moving files from the right pane to the left pane within one Explorer window. I can drag to the Desktop, or between two Explorer windows.

I also notice some strange behaviour on the Desktop. Sometimes it takes two attempts to move a file. The first is ignored.

This has happened since day one of running the PC, so I can't really blame any of the apps I've installed.

Anyone else experiencing this - or better found a solution?

    TT

My explorer case was that it crashed when I do a right click. The solution was to do a system restore and uninstall the program that puts itself in the context menu.

Weird, it was fixed, and then I reinstalled Adobe Acrobat Reader and buggered it again. Trouble is this time uninstalling didn't fix it.

    Problem remains, dammit.

Okay this is spooky. Now it's fixed again.

Definitely, if you're having this issue uninstall Acrobat. I'll post an advice in a few days if it turns out to hold.

Thanks, but unfortunately, that appears to have brought the problem back.

Very frustrating. What a crappy operating system this is!

Do you have all the other latest Windows updates installed? I am running a TZ with 2GB Ram, Vista Business and Adobe Reader and Acrobat Standard version 8.1 installed and Windows explorer has only crashed twice in the 3 months I have had my machine. what other apps do you have on there?

After uninstalling and reinstalling a bunch of programs, running System File Checker, etc, it turned out to the Toshiba Bluetooth Stack. I had to completely uninstall it. Stopping Bluetooth Manager and services wasn't enough.

    Haven't tried reinstalling yet.

I know! I had a crash last night and then Windows tells me that there's an update available to improve the reliability of Vista:

    http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=938979

But when I try to install this update, I get a message that says that "this update is not applicable to this computer." Whiskey Tango Foxtrot?!? (WTF?).

Man, I've seen that update a load of times. I love the way it says the problem in Vista was caused by Microsoft Vista!

I uninstalled and reinstalled loads of stuff and worked it out by trial and error. Turned out the stack that had shipped with my TZ was faulty. No mention of it on Sony's site, but installing the driver from the support site didn't show the same error. I think (vague recollection) - after receiving thousands of error messages - a fix might've appeared on Windows Update as well.

Whatever the case, it all works now. Moved on.
