Help, I've cracked the screen on my TZ17GN leaving a black smudged line a third of the way down and two thirds the way across. Does anyone know if Sony can/will replace it (under warranty even), or whether you can do it yourself?

    Thanks,

    TT

You will have to pay the parts. They cant repair it as a warranty-case, as it is not their fault.

If you prefer doing it by yourself, ask |SONY|.
    In this thread,
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=208981&page=3
Post #23 he promises the availiability of every part necessary for repairing/tuning/refurbishing the Notebook...

    other szenario:
Do you have an insurance for your TZ? That should pay it... Sony offers those insurances as a "wide-field-warranty" but not everywhere in the world. For example: mine includes
"liquids, electric strokes, crashdowns and crushes", but only inside Japan; that leaves me the shipping-fees... but excludes data-loss and TPM-problems!
Unfortunately Sony would only repair my laptop if it has a Japanese windows installed. They say that their craftsmen can only speak Japanese and they won't even touch a foreign installation...
    Japan is like that...

Please upload a photo of that screen. I don't want to bother you, but we "need" some pics for the durability thread!

Do you have the "plastic" or the "carbon"-lid?

All TZ models have a carbon-fiber lid, all of them have the same lid, only difference would be the look of the lid.

ACK! But I'd like to know what grade of violence is required to kill (my) a TZ-Screen.

I'd left the note on the floor beside my bed, and very lightly stepped on it.

Wasn't the brightest thing to do, but all the same, this is a very fragile notebook. I'd already broken a tiny lug off the battery, which is now taped in place to stop it falling out.

My previous machine, was the original in the series, the TR1, and it's still going strong.

Shall do. Aren't all the lids carbon fibre?

Whatever the case, it's too thin, and flexible for my liking.

Those of you who bought their TZ from the US would've had the options for lifetime warranty for damage. The promo involved a purchase of 2 Vaio accesories like mouse and case and they woul throw in the accidental damage warranty for "free". Basically the rep at the store said you can do pretty much anything to it (other than get it stolen) and they would replace it brand new...

but I'm guessing you didn't get this...?

Yes all the lids are carbon fiber.

Don't think so. Mine's the international model, bought in Japan.

Any idea whether I'll be able to fix it?

Of course you'll be able to fix it; it just won't be covered under the warranty. You can have Sony do it (parts+labor) or you can possibly do it yourself. The LCD panel is available on Sony parts for $4xx.

did you even tried to call sony about it? say something like that the labor on these are so cheap that cracked with the slightest bend and if it can repair under warranty :p (considering you're still within their 1 year warranty). just give it a shot. who knows. worst case just pay yourself.

Is that in writing somewhere? I've heard plenty of Best Buy stories, so I'd be wary of anything a commission hungry salesman will tell you to make that sale.
