is it just me or is the glossy finish on the TZ keyboard area getting scratches fairly easily. Im pretty careful with my notebooks but me and my brothers "he has a TZ90" is get micro scratches from just light use. Are other TZ owners experiencing the same thing and if so what can we do to get rid of these scratches. This is the one reason I hate glossy finish especially on the keyboard area where there is alot of use. I really feel for those who have glossy finish all over the notebooks
-
Checking out your sig, you really do love vaios
-
yah its a addiction
-
Yes, thats what I dislike, glossy surfaces on notebooks or anything else, looks pretty at first but then gets all scratched and smudged up, like the glossy covers on the HP Pavilions, Asus U1 and the keyboard area on the TZ. I was worried about the keyboard area getting scratched on my hypothetical TZ.
What you can do is get a keyboard skin made for the TZ, called "Cooskin", a forum member here installed it on his TZ, protects it from crumbs, wear, scratches etc.

hmmmmm not really my cup of tea
-
Sorry, no other suggestions but I do agree the glossy finish looks great but is not at all practical. That's the one thing that almost stopped me from buying my TZ.
-
i think it would look cool if the next refresh had carbon fiber

suggestions???????

I havent/wont try it on my TZ til I see scratches or someone else verifys it. But whenever I have a gadget that has micro scratches on it, I usually use some auto polish and a light microfiber cloth, rub it in gently on affected areas being careful not to get it anywhere you dont want it, and I wouldnt want it in my TZ for that matter. Let it dry, and rub off with another clean microfiber cloth. It works for cellphones showing their age etc. But I've had my TZ for about a month now, cant say I see any scratches and I've only cleaned it once (right before I saw this post actually) no scratches on it, looks great. Getting the leather jacket for it though, cant stand the slight scuff on the edge of the case from carrying it in my bag.
I did however notice the matte finish on the keys and keyboard wears quicker than most laptops I've owned. That bothers me a little bit. -
how bout those ipod scratch removers seems like its the same material
-
Not sure, I've never used those. Not an iPod man myself. I use an Archos 605 160 GB wifi. I use yellow microfiber cloths I bought in a huge pack at costco. Its like 12 bucks for 24 or something. I highly recommend it.
-
Yeah unfortunately the glossy finish is a scratch magnet. So far so good with my cooskin... covers the entire area and even has hole for th speakers. When I want to show it off I just remove the skin... not a single scratch on it.
On a side note... the motion eye presses agains the finger print reader and gets greasy marks occasionally... I guess thats when my laptop bag gets knocked around. Even when its in the leather case that comes with the TZ195... -
yah it is pretty annoying the micro scratches
-
-
yah that what i was thinking because it cost 130 for a new palm rest
-
I ordered my Cooskin from that eBay guy but the post office has lost it. So the seller is sending me another one. I think it's a great solution and, yes, the keyboard is going to get scratched! You have your fingernails pounding on it 1,000 times a day, what do you expect?
Not to mention the many particles of food entering the keyboard. My TZ90, which I'm finally able to ship back now, and which I plan to keep after selling this TZ198, can hardly type now due to that Iberia wine spill!
Oh, and another thing, without that Cooskin, the lettering from your keys will totally disappear, as Sony has made the lettering even thinner and hard to see on the TZ198!
I would protect the keyboard with a Cooskin, even if you don't like its looks, because even if Sony introduces a spill-proof keyboard on the next TZ series, a likelihood, you won't be able to eliminate the scratching.
-
I really like that Cooskin idea. I am ordering a TZ170 tomorrow and think I will get a 'skin. My TZ will be used at conferences by multiple presenters and will need the protection.
Recently, a Dell Laptop was destroyed when a pitcher of water was knocked onto it. The Cooskin might not have saved it, but it would have helped. -
interesting

ok talked to sony today sending my laptop to have them look at replacing the keyboard and palm rest area any ideas on how to convince them the screen is rubbing against the palm rest and glossy keyboard area?????
-
Anyone know where to get the cooskin for the Vaio TZ?
Can't find it on ebay any more. -
suggestions

answeres???????

You think the problem is caused by the screen rubbing when the laptop is closed? What will you do to prevent the problem from happening after it is fixed?
-
probably get a cover
-
Maybe you can talk to the right person at Sony, and explain to them how you are helping forum members decide on what to buy. Maybe they will give you some extra service. Getting to the right person at Big Bad Sony will be tough.
I own a Sony Vaio desktop, many Sony video products and have a shopping cart at B&H filled with a TZ and case, ready to order. My hesitation has been the fact that it is a new product, so I have been checking this board and your posts on an almost hourly basis.
It is obvious that Sony has a lots of customer service problems and needs owners like you testing their products and assisting cosumers like me. I would think that they would want you to be happy.
Anyway, thanks for your post and good luck in solving your issue. -
You have to be kidding. Anything you buy, regardless of what it is, is bound to get scratched up and worn out. This applies even more to consumer electronics. Suck it up and buy a keyboard cover if it really bothers you. It doesn't really help you, but you wouldn't notice scratches on the white one as much.
-
i rather have a white keyboard as it is less noticable
-
maybe im just being anal but consider how much tz are we should be I wouldn't care if this was a Asus EEE but you pay more for quality and the considering how thin the LCD screen is it will flex and rub on the keyboard area and palm rest.
-
here is another post about this issue

From his description, it sounds like a design flaw. I have not seen any pictures so it's hard to tell the severity of the problem.
-
well my brother has a tz90 and he has the same issue i just have it on the keyboard area
-
The TZ150N's that we bought come with a cleaning cloth. They recommend that you place the cloth out on the keyboard before closing the screen to prevent damage both to the glossy surface on the keyboard, and the screen itself.
-
And I quote-
"To prevent the LCD screen and keyboard from damage, for example in the case of carrying the computer, spread out the cleaning cloth with no wrinkles on top of the keyboard before closing the LCD screen lid." -
BTW, I now I have my CooSkin covering my keyboard and it feels fine! Typing is not a hassle at all because the skin fits the keyboard perfectly. The only thing I don't particularly like is that you need to tape the edges down with that ugly white tape they provided. I guess you really don't have to do that, but I did it anyway.
And with the CooSkin, I certainly no longer have to worry about the keyboard scratching the display! -
where did you buy your cooskin ubercool?

I got mine from this seller. You dont need to use the double sided tape cos the suction/static from the cooskin holds it down sufficiently. -
I use both the Cooskin and the ShaggyMac cloth. Bought both when I bought my TZ after reading about user experiences with the screen touching the keyboard.
