Was using my TZ 2 days ago, and it was perfect. When I opened it up yesterday, there was a crack on the LCD. I have not brought it out between the 2 occasions that I used it, and am puzzled at what happened.

The worse thing is that when I brought it to Sony earlier today, they refused to repair it. Claim that LCD cracks are accidental hence not covered by warranty. I could swear that I have never drop it, hit it, sit on it, whatever, but no use, I have to cough out 1/3 the price of the notebook to have it replaced.

From the exterior, it looks like new, no knocks, scratches or anything that may suggest that there was a drop event, misuse, abuse, etc ...

Did Sony compromise minimal level of reliability / ruggedness for thinness and beauty ???

My previous DELL notebook was much tougher ... and they provided on-site LCD replacement when I called and complain that the screen was not bright enough ....

Seriously, Dell's warranty and support is far better than Sony's.

I feel its just a waste of money buying Sony at such a premium price when Dell can give us better configuration and better support!

I have had Acer, HP, Compaq, Dell and now Sony....and I know the difference.

Sorry to hear the bad news.

The underlying problem is that the display is a glass panel and is less flexible than the carbon-fibre casing. The metal alloy screen backs are much better in that respect. However, cracking the glass without causing any other visible damage must be difficult.

I always try to carry my notebooks so the back of the display is against something flat. The other hazard for notebooks without display latches is that an object gets inside between the display and keyboard and then the notebook is squeezed shut.
