I did a semi-clean install on the TZ150, and deleted as much bloatware as I thought I would not need. I removed quite a bit of programs from the start menu as well. It now takes me 4 Min 20 Sec, from a cold start, to the time when the sidebar in Vista comes up, and the unit can open a web page. Maybe some of this time is due to the fact that it takes a while for the wireless drivers to get set up.

Any ideas (other than switching to XP or a SSD drive) to speed things up? The semi-clean install took me about 5 hours, including re-installing my programs.

Can a SSD drive in the card slot be used to boot from?

my advice to you is to just do a clean install of xp which is faster or vista. Even though you unistalled the programs all the registry changes from the programs along with elements bogs down the computer. Search for the clean install threads on here where you can find a step by step procedure along with links to the required drivers for your choice of os. My brother has a TZ190 and has xp installed and boot up takes like 40secs.

Definitely try to do a clean install, which will probably lower your boot time to just under a min.

I am not sure what you mean by a clean install. I followed instructions on this site, backed up my recovery disks, backed up the recovery folder, then rebooted the PC, while holding the F10 key, and then reformatted the drive, and as it was about to install Windows Vista, I did a CTL-ALT-DEL, and stopped the recovery program.
After It finished installing Vista, I put the recovery folder back in, and restored the needed files/drivers.
This is what I would consider an almost clean install.

    What am I missing?

clean install is not using the F10 recovery program from sony that just reinstalls on the apps that came on there to begin with it basically restores it to facrory default settings. Clean install ins backing up your folders and reinstalling a clean xp or vista from scratch. Put the cd in and when prompt it will load windows setup delete and format on partitions including the hidden one and install windows. With XP it should take about 7 GB maybe less of your hardrive space Im not sure of vista; You also can try Nlite or Vlite to make your windows even smaller. All this requires you to have a copy of the windows your installing. You can always borrow a friends or download vista os on bittorent and use your key on the bottom of your notebook. I do recommend you installing xp though and wait to install vista until SP1 comes out. I hope this answers your question

This is so true imo. In these forums many people seem to be believing in semi-clean installs.

There's nothing like a clean install.

But Phil have you managed to get all drivers working using a full clean install?

You can also wait a month, because someone said Sony would offer a downgrade disk by October. :)

Actually I don't wanna do a downgrade, just have a nice clean (preferably 64-bit) installation of Vista when my SZ6 arrives.
