I had to replace my Z790... screen got damaged so i decided to replace the whole unit. I wanted to take parts from this unit, like its bluray drive, ram and 256gb SSD raid setup and place it into my VPCZ112GX.

I looked into the dBD drive swap from http://forum.notebookreview.com/sony/518005-vaio-vpc-z128gg-blu-ray-drive-uj-242-result-12.html and it appears to me that the button wont work on my keyboard so im gonna hold off. Windows reports BD-RE in my computer.

I did the ram, but what i was curious about is the SSD RAID0 from the VGNZ. Is there a way to swap them into the VPCZ112GX?? Will they fit? Any expert tips I can have so I dont make any mistakes please.

    Thank you!

    Here are some pictures:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/sony/511578-how-replace-ssd-vaio-vpcz11-vpcz12-non-sony-ssd.html

About your blu-ray drive, you can always try it, then use the utility supplied by pyr0 to remap one of the Vaio/[][]/Assist keys to eject for you:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/sony/538942-how-use-all-your-vpc-zs-s-buttons-your-purposes.html

I heard that if you replace the disc drive with a hard drive you get to remap the eject key, but the problem here is that if you install a disk drive, the Z will think you have a disc drive and thus, you wont be able to remap the eject.

Thank you for that tip. That could work too. :)

I been looking around and I been thinking about doing SSD + HDD combo by removing the optics drive and using the HDD caddy from 2nd hard drive / SSD caddy - Sony VAIO Z, Z11, Z12, Z13, VPC [SONY-2BAY-Z11] - $43.00 : NewmodeUS, Hard Drive Caddys for Notebooks

then i could have lots of storage for my media and graphics files on the HDD... and the SSD for applications and the os. I just may go with this setup.

Or would it be possible to buy the caddy listed above and take one SSD from my VGN-Z laptop and and use them together in the VPC-Z? The SSDs in the VGN-Z are Micro SATA right? Which is different from the usual laptop 2.5 sata connection? Is there an adapter to get the SSD to the caddy if this is true?

The SSD's that are raided in the VGN-z are a 1.8 microsata drives correct? If i remove one, break the raid and reinstall windows the laptop will still work? I hope. :D

Thank you for all the help you all are giving me. This makes it more fun to play with these laptops.

The adapter you linked is what i think most people use on this forum, but in any case, it holds a 2.5" drive. here's a thread about replace DVD with a HDD by Zoinks, it's an older thread:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/sony/469244-z11-replace-dvd-hdd-working-solution.html

In any case, that link has a installation guide for the caddy linked on their page.

If u break a RAID0 array, you lose the information, so back it up first, then u can treat them as however many individual drives. I'm sure you can buy a micro-Sata to Sata cable somewhere, i think a few have done this, although personally i've not much experience with this as i'm still rocking my DVD drive.

Thank you for the link... just saw in the thread an enclosure for the DVD drive too. that a great idea.

Thank you for the friendly reminder to backup also. Im in the process of looking for a micro sata to sat cable right now.

I found 1.8 - 2.5 Drive Adapter 3.3v support (MicroSATA to SATA)Black [SATA-MICROSATA3.3] - $35.75 : NewmodeUS, Hard Drive Caddys for Notebooks from the same site but its pricey to me. I would rather have a cable instead if its cheaper. Recommendations on cables anybody?
