    Hey Duke,

That sucks that it makes wierd noises, but all notebook drives that i've owned have been very loud. (both my Thinkpad drives + the slot loading ones on a macbook and macbook pro of family members) have been very loud. Sometimes they also make a beep type noise. I've never actually exerienced a quiet DVD-RW drive on a notebook.

I'm sure someone is going to immediatley come on here and begin posting how notebook XYZ is whisper quiet...but i've worked in IT and seen many a notebooks (dell, toshiba, sony, apple, compaq) and they're all pretty loud.

Screeching noise though...you should call sony and have it checked out, or better yet, if your in a major urban area, see if your sonystyle store has a backstage, they might replace it on the spot.

    Good luck!

FYI, backstage is the same thing as apple's genius bar(they have them in boston, chicago, nyc, san francisco, LA, and some other cities)

The Optiarc DVD RW AD-7910S (from Device Manager) that I have makes a small thumping noise (the lens compartment moving) when it turns back on, no screech to be heard. It beeps when it reads something. Is yours the same model as mines?

I can't remember if I heard screeching, I think it did when it reads data off a disk.

Could this be because its a CTO instead of pre-configured? Haven't there been some build quality issues with Vaio CTOS? Just throwing something around. :(

My SR that was pre-configured does make that slight sound... like a thumpish I guess when it turns the Optical drive back on, but really, I don't find it all that annoying or loud. But yeah, all of the optical drives I have ever heard on ANY computer seem to be loud and noticeable. I think it's just because of the spinning motion that is made for the discs.

Of course, I will probably use it only a little, I'm not big on burning discs or anything. I have SD/MS cards.

In fact, I'd say that it's probably one of the better ones I've had interaction with.
