    Old information:

Because the old thread ( http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=143899) is big with info scattered all around, I had the idea to make a short concise guide.

All credits go to guys like Centjie, bmnotpls and others for paving the way. I just collected info and edited a bit. Consider this a live document. Your input, additions and corrections are welcome.

Installing Windows XP On a Sony Vaio TZ

Function keys, Power management, HDD protection, and more
-Install the XP utilities for TZ

    CPU throttling*
For the cpu throttling use rmclock http://cpu.rightmark.org/download/rmclock_225_bin.exe I use that in conjunction with the sony power management and that works well.

    Memory speed*
in the Sony utilities by default the memory is clocked to 400 Mhz. for optimal performance clock to 533 Mhz.

    Non-software updates:*
    BIOS [R0052N7]: http://vcl.vaio.sony.co.jp/download/SP-014674-07.html
    DVD firmware upgrade [Ver.1.21]: http://vcl.vaio.sony.co.jp/download/SP-014040-03.html

Someone told me (forgot who) that one can also install the utilities for TX.

Is there any benefit in installing TX utils instead of BX utils?

So the only thing you need to be able to change the memory clock is " 2_SONY_UTILITIES_DLL " ?

My memory (RAM) is set to 533 Mhz as default.
Think only TZ-Vista applications sets it lower, 400 Mhz...

When I installed XP + Sony utlities I found out it was set to 400 Mhz.
I guess it's connected to some kind of energy profile.

    *******

It turns out that TX5 has more utilities than BX4
    ftp://ftp.vaio-link.com/pub/OS/XPDOWNGRADE/TX5/UTILITIES/

Does anyone know if we should recommend installing TX5 utils instead of BX4?

Awhile ago, I left a comment asking that guy what drivers he used. After that, he deleted all comments. He seems like an ass.

Also, that's not Japanese. It's either Mandarin or Cantonese.

Yes, I know what TPM is, I just don't have it in my TZ.

If you search the other thread on TPM you get lots of info. Also something with Bios.

    OK,

I think so , Most of the problem is the fact that TPM Driver maybe..

Could be due to Bios version or not...

    thanks

PhilFlow, I can understand why ppl strugle, including myself.

This is not because its easy/hard, its just WTF.

Some vista driver works, some don't some only works for XP, some don't, and most of them, the latest -drivers (e.g., intel chipset + graphic) can be downloaded directly off the Intel website.

Anyway, Phil, Im having some serious problem with Fn Key

Basically, Brightness works, but not the volumne

Also, S button crap don't work , I believe I ened to install a Status Monitor for XP ?I can not find it.

As well, How would be able to do Power-saving that actually 'manages' to throttle CPU down (e.g, to 60%) as it was there in the Vista.
I have installed the Power Management from your first post. But this version do not seemed to include that...

    Thanks.

Ok this is very good to know Zerodays.

A couple of days ago I replaced the link to BX utils with TX utils in the first post, becuase I thought they would be a better match.

Judging by your post I would say the BX utils are a better match. Here's the link: ftp://ftp.vaio-link.com/pub/OS/XPDOWNGRADE/BX4/APPLICATIONS

When I installed the BX utils (the way suggested in the thread) my Volume keys were working.

I thought the Sony powermanagement only lets you throttle Memory speed (533/400) but I'm not sure about that. I used RMclock for CPU.

Zerodays, did you succesfully do this step:
-Then extract the TZ Event Services for Windows Vista (link) and copy the vesconfig.ini to the TX version. Use "Universal Extractor" tool to extract http://legroom.net/software/uniextract. This gets all the hotkeys and power management and everything else working. (The only issue is that the power managment app has a bunch of fields/components that aren't applicable to the tz.)

Thanks Phil I will defintely try that tonight, BTW, another questions.

does your RMclock stably working with your TZ ? e.g., any stbility issues, such as program hanging, its basically underclocking right? (which is the 'same' function as the TZ's Vista CPU throttle?)

    Cheers

PhilFlow, I tried that Bx utilities, before that I obviously copied the Vista-TZ Vesconfig.ini file. And copied back after installing Sony-Control.

So the sound + brightness works.

    NOW... a few more thing

Battery-Care ? How so? I know someone posted that copying their BatteryCare from ProgramFile folder would work in XP too. But I don't have it.

Also, Status Monitor ?? Where? How? My S-button do not work.
Or put it this way, how can I install Status Monitor?

    cheers..

well, well,. I give up , ahahah... at least Fn key works, so I can use those.

It looks like RMClock is working okay, too. So I'm happy with that...

Ok, as far as I know, my XP runs very very fast. Thats all I need.
I have 2 question ? mark in my device manager, one says unkown device, the other says unknown USB device.
I know one of them must be Felicaport, I could be bothtered. so I just disabled both of them. :) (and most likely I also will disable memory stick + SD card + fire-wire port as I won't be using them).

As well, it also looks like intel's XP driver for chipset+graphics are much more responsive and fast.

For a brief info, Hibernation now only takes around ~25sec. That is good enough.

    Perhaps, I should try SP-3 previews. hehe;;

It's funny with SSD it's not faster to hybernate anymore.

Booting up makes no difference. Closing down is quicker than hybernating

well, Im pretty sure hibernation would be faster with a normal HDD
given that Hibernation is 'one' fragment of 2GB file, writing sequentially on a rotating disk at about 45MB/s with 2.5inch HDD will outperform SSD.

resuming just took me about 20sec,..

yes, I will shutdown if I have a lttle or no applicatino running.

yeah propably the Sandisk SSD would perform much better. jjashik can tell us.

yep, I will aim for 2.5inch SSD (As they generally perform faster by about 15MB/s comapre to 1.8inch one)

But jjashik have different OS, and I'm pretty sure he can't beat my score..
As I think my TZ-XP is already optimized for speed. :p
e.g., my SSD have 20GB left, 2 x 2GB file (1 for page-file, 1 for hib file) both are in 'one' fragmentation, I used a program to make sure. Finally, I defragged SSD. As well, all settings are set to 'performance' no micky-cuty-roundy corners or blue-greenines XP theme.

Hi - I have followed the guide and my TZ18 is now running lightning fast with XP. My only real problem is that with the intel video drivers the only screen resolution i can get is 1024 x 768

I have tried every driver and downloaded the ones from intel.

If i remove the drivers altogether i can use my proper screen resolution, however graphics performance is terrible.

    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    ANdrew

agordo, that is exactly what i had, u just need to go to 'monitor' under the device manager (not the display adaptor) and uninstall all the monitors listed there. reboot and it should be fine. Or you can manually install plug&play generic monitor.

When I finished I think I had one question mark left. It was one unknown USB device, i think that was the Felicaport.

    Have you tried installing it?
    Felica port*

Hello there, this is just a wonderfull forum and knowledge source.

I ve done the Vista downgrading to XP almost successfull.

Im only having troubles with my microphone, i have followed all steps, and is all working but the mic.

Mic input levels are ok, so its not a volumen thing issue, any idea? anybody has experimented microphone problems?

    Thanks

I used Diskeeper Professional to defrag my SSD before selling it and it did a great job. Supposedly, Vista defrags in the background, but obviously not so well.

Also, PC Tools Registry Mechanic found more than 700 errors after just three months of use. So my sense is that both are required although I was nervous using these utilities because of any potential negative interaction with Vista.

Looks like these tools are useful and safe. YMMV of course.

I am getting the same problem as others on this board with the video setting up at 1024x768. When I go into the Device Manager and remove the 3 Monitors (Digital Flat Panel (1024x768)) and reboot the monitor is fine and after a second reboot the monitors are back and the resolution is changed again. Is there anyway to remove these driver manually from the system. Any assistance is appreciated as this is driving me nuts.
