I've got about $1,500 to spend therefore I can't afford an S260 but I found an S160 for about $1,530. My question is does the S160 differ any from the S160 besides the specs? I've spent several trips to Best Buy to look and play around with the S260, and I really like it. However, I just want to make sure that if I go with the S170, I'll be getting what I expect (that is the same as the S270 except for some lesser specs). Any other differences I should be aware of? Thanks!

Sorry, I got the models confused a bit. The notebook I'm interested in getting for a little over $1,500 is the S170, and the one at Best Buy that I really like is the S260.

The s170 is the configurable model. There was basicly no change from the s1xx and the s2xx.The only real "upgrade" was that sony added the option of a dvd+-rw on the s2xx and the s1xx only had the option of the dvd-r.Sony ran out of the dvd+-rws really fast tho.

The specs for the A170 being sold at eCost.com are:
Intel® Centrino processor at 1.5GHz, 256MB DDR SDRAM, 40GB hard drive, DVD/CD-RW combo, 802.11b/g Wireless, 12.1 XGA TFT display, Microsoft Windows XP Pro
I thought I remember the A260 at BestBuy having a 60GB hard drive and I know it had 512mb RAM. I don't care about XP Pro (Home is just fine). Anyone know where to find the cheapest one having Xbrite screen, 60GB or bigger hard drive? -
And the above spec'd S170 at eCost is going for $1,450. What bothers me is that it doesn't come with XBRITE screen apparently, and only has a 40GB hard drive. After seeing the S260 XBRITE screen at Best Buy, I wouldn't want anything else - it was sweet.

I think may be able to get a better price than that. Check out this reseller model list. http://www.ita.sel.sony.com/B2B/downloads/S170_skus.htm
Then plug the model names into pricegrabber.com .

Alt - I'm going to post a thread relating to these rebates because I want anyone who has tried using them all to respond. This seems WAY TO GOOD to be true. $850 worth of rebates makeing the price for a brand new Sony Vaio S260 $1,250??? Just doesn't seem right. I wish I had an Office Depot in my town to check this out in person.

Anyone know how to determine whether the display is XBRITE or not? Will it state that it is XBRITE. The specs that I listed below state: 12.1 XGA TFT display - I assume this is not XBRITE, correct? It seems that the stores that I found good pricing on the S160 don't include the XBRITE display (which is a deal breaker for me).

Well, my question is more specifcally, how to determine whether it is XBRITE by the description given by retailers. It's pretty obvious to me whether it is XBRITE if I were looking at the laptop, but that's not what I'm doing. I'm considering purchasing one on-line, and I just want to make sure it has a XBRITE display (since this is very important).
