I've been thinking of getting a FJ, but i was wondering if its a little outdated. For the people that have owned one, is it worth it to get it now?

If i don't get a FJ i'll probably end up getting a Dell e1505 which would have double the ram and the harddrive would be 100 GB 7200 instead of 5400. The only thing i really like more about the Sony is the style, and the brand.

I bought an FJ recently (like a week or 2 ago), and was wondering the exact same thing, except I was going between the FJ and the E1405. I bought the Sony becaseu Inspirons have pretty bad build quality, and I liked the Sony Brand , reliability, and style (my mom has a VAIO FX240 with a P3 and ME, and it still runs pretty well). Also, the FJ has one of the best screens available.
It honestly depends on what you are going to do with it. Is it outdated? Yes, but if you arent going to do anything that intensive of the GPU or CPU, then it does not matter at all. I can listen to my iTunes, rip an audio CD to my hard drive, download large files from the internet, and also type up a Word doc at the same time. can it run two cpu intensive tasks at the same time? probably not, but I wont be doing that anyways.
Keep in mind that the Dell will be sub-par quality (not to rip on the owners of Inspirons) and it will weigh more, because its a 15.4" mid size. its like 6.6lbs vs. 5.2 for the sony.
I love my laptop and I think that it is good enough for basic tasks. Costco has the same one that I have for $1149.

to be honest the dell e1505 build quality suck
it's ugly and bulky (had one, and sold it)
the only good thingf is the screen and price
if you can afford the sony, get it

I was wondering if there would be a really big difference between a fully loaded e1505 and the FJ. I don't really have any experience with fast computers since my computer has like 256mb of ram at most and its life is hangin' by a thread. So i'm kinda worried that the FJ would be like that in a few years, i don't want to regret my choice.

So would the FJ be a good choice if i wanted to use Photoshop, download big files, and surf the web at the same time? How much of a difference would there be between the performance of the e1505 (fully loaded) and the FJ

there is no question that the e1505 will be the better performer. in fact, running multiple programs at one time is something the core duo is good at. also, i believe that photoshop runs better with core duo processors because it is a multithreaded program.

the FJ is pretty and depending on what you'll be using for, it may be a good notebook for the price.

It notes Vista capable but FJ (1.83GHz) runs on Vista beta very slowly (my test). I dont know if anyone have tried Vista beta on FJ?

It depends on your utility for that particular FJ model. Sure, it's a little outdated... but if you are going to use it for spreadsheets and word processing, then why does it matter? You'll feel the same when you got a core duo notebook since you will use it for the same reasons. It only matters when you are doing CPU intensive tasks such as photo or a little bit of movie editing. The FJ is a pretty good notebook... thin and light and low priced if you do your research well...

I've been thinking, if i got a FE instead, how much better would it be than the FJ? Also i've been wondering if the FJ can be upgraded easily.

An FE would have superior performance, longevity and to me would be the sensible option if you can afford it
