I recently inherited a Sony VGN-AX580G running XP and noticed that the function keys weren't working. It didn't take me long to discover that this is a widespread problem. After attempting many driver installations, reading countless forum posts, and attempting additional installations, I stumbled across a very unexpected solution.

    Here is what I did:

    1. I uninstalled the VAIO Event Service application with the Windows Add-or-Remove-Programs control panel.
    2. I uninstalled the Sony Utilities DLL application with the Windows Add-or-Remove-Programs control panel.
    3. I installed the originally shipped versions of the following Sony® Notebook Utilities with SOOOTH-33700000-US.EXE:
    • Sony Utilities DLL
    • Sony Setting Utility Series
    • VAIO® Event Service
    • Battery Check Utility
    • Wireless Switch Setup Utility
    • LAN Setting Utility

After I did those three things, all of the Sony-specific functions worked, including the Camera Off, Mute, S1, and S2 buttons. Then, after the computer restarted, none of the Sony-specific functions worked. After repeating the above three steps, the Sony-specific functions are now working fine.

Is that odd, or what?
