All latest laptops being of the x64 architecture I find it a bit of a shame that the laptop manufacturers hardly have any support (with Sony none!) for 64-bit operating systems. Now I've recently got myself a new SZ680 with 4GB's of RAM and would like to use that fully, and run Vista 64-bit on it.
Bro has Vista 64-bit installed on his Acer and after a few drive workarounds everything works like a charm, touch wood.
I see quite a lot of fellow forum members have also gotten a new SZ with 4GB's of RAM so was wondering whether anbody has had any luck with getting Vista to use it all as well as in installing 64-bit Vista on it, and if they did it, how (driver locations, registry fixes, etc.)
Here my SZ is busy getting 64-bit installed as I'm writing so I'll post about the progress on things a bit later.
Problem #1 (pre-installation): the BIOS only shows 3GB RAM (I opened up the RAM slots though and did find 2x 2GB RAM sticks)
...

lol have fun, people can't even get 32 xp to work without major headache
-
so whats the diference between the 32-bit and 64-bit?¿?
-
-
Ok a little update on things, Vista 64-bit installed and the laptop loads up fine.
Windows shows 4GB RAM, though the BIOS only shows 3GB, any thoughts on this? Is Windows actually using 4GB now?
6 devices for which there were no drivers present in the installation disc, so I'm going to try and fix those now (Fingerprint, Mass StorageController, Network Controller (presumably the Wireless), UGX and 2 Unknowns.
The DVD-RW drive DOES seem to have been detected fine so no problems that Roxio is not there.
Oh and btw, the OEM serial key you receive with your laptop does work on a clean Vista 64-bit disc (32-bit too of course), so no troubles with that...
Tbc... -
how's this going?
-
I gave up completely for now. Maybe when SP1 comes out I'd give it a second shot.

Synthesia, I keep sending sony emails saying that they are retards for not putting 64 bit on such a fine machine and every freakin time i get this back
"Sony does not support the 64 bit version of the Windows Vista operating System on your computer. We can not warrant nor guarantee the full usability, or functionality, of our PCs when running under the 64 bit version of the Operating System."
I think We can start a class action law suit because the losers dont even put specs on their sony style page to tell anyone the bit version.
I HATE SONY and this after owning all sony products. I WILL NEVER BUY A SONY PRODUCT again this is their reply
"We apologize that you are not completely satisfied with your Sony product. Each new generation of products will include enhancements and features to suit the changing needs of our customers. We appreciate the time you have taken to share your comments with us. It is important that we receive this feedback from our customers so that we may better serve you in the future.
Customer feedback is invaluable in our continuing product design and development process. We sincerely regret that you are dissatisfied. Unfortunately, Sony does not offer a trade-in, exchange or buy-back program. Our manufacturer's warranty is for repair only."
PHUK SONY!!! and the idiots that choose which operationg system to use.! -
you're overreacting, lol theres no chance for a lawsuit of any kind.
and most programs arent optimized for 64bit.
not yet atleast. no real use for it as of now -
roor i guess iam overreacting. I am just pissed because, well let me give you an example at how fast data can process in a 64 bit environment.
I run XP 64 on a machine and i had to install another copy of adobe creative suit 2... this is amazing i timed it 4:55 seconds to install all of it 100% on the 32 bit version same computer different boot it took 34 minutes.
Data rates is amazing on 64 bit and that is what I do that is why i am overreacting. yes it will be amazing when software designers like games and graphics like adobe run in 64 bit but until then data data data.
SO anyways i have a team of 38 people and I sent another reply to sony saying that if they can release 64 bit drivers for vista on the proprietary device on our SZ series then I will buy SZ680n for eeryone but if they cant seem to send it onto their engineers and get the drivers i am buying the acer ferrari for everyone. The person receiving the email will probably delete it.
Cheers -
It gave them a deadling of 31 oct 2007 because that is the end of my fiscal year and i want to order them in this fiscal year for expense reasons.

Well I'll be trying to get the info across to them via Feedback questionnaires, their Vaio Link forums and customer service...the more people who do this the better I think.

Good luk synthesia! we can only try but the Bureaucracy of sony is based on Japanese culture and who know what they do there. All i know is that consumers like you and I dont get what we want.
I hate the memory stick why did they have to make one seperate opposed to a 7 in 1 card reader?
Why didnt they put a curved keyboard in like the ACER ferrari?
Why no HDMI?
WHY VGA and not DVI?
why no slot load dvd?
why use a modem when the thing has blue tooth and most cell phones have blue tooth?
WHY put all that bloatware on the systems when no one wants it.
O ok so...synthesia you have 4gb of ram, right? if sony doesnt ever intend to offer 64 bit support then why do they offer 4gb of ram when 32 bit can only see a max of 3.5 gb?
Sony suks. I will never buy sony again, sadly said. I want to divorce sony. my laptop is for sell by the way
1900.00 sz680n with t7700 blah blah blah windows 32 -
boraboty, fully understood, i have that same, exact feeling as you have.
but,, what can we do?..... a lot of large manufacurers like sony really aims to suck uraine out of noobs, remember, TONS of people are noobs. seriously.
On the other hand, we have a few pro users, (and they dont who dont use M$ product., i.e., no windows OS) and most of them go for Dell anyway, simply becasue a lot of hardwares in dell is not dell's own module, in which, i believe many people tend to take this benefit to hack stuffs, etc.
boraboy, if you are not going for Sony TZ (as this is one of slim+fastest CPU for ULV), then I don';t understand why you bought Sony.
You should have gotten Samsung or LG, or even Dell for sake., provided that you are wanting screen size of say ~ 13 to 15inch.
To me, I dont see 'any' reason for any other Sony models except Sony TZ.
why? as I said, TZ and (toshiba R500) is the only laptop that is 'extremely' portable and be able to run many programs
(again, if you really want super-portable, then you need to get Ultra-portable, which is famously produced by Panasonic and Fujitsu, note that these screen sizes are about 5~10inch.. so) -

ScuderiaConchiglia : ok, I also see your point, but I think I already told him that he should have chosen other brand.
"are no 1.5 gb memory sticks available"
32bit OS, can do 2^32 memory allocation which is theoritcally 4GB max. However, every 32bit OS have their own overheads, thus can not possibly 'see' 4GB, so, those 0.5GB are simply 'wasted' as these areas are 'uncontrolled' by OS. Thats what he meant.
I have used various 32/64bit OS, and I must agree that it is stupid, but this is all about the system architecture.
Sony (or any computer companies) will never want to say
'We advise you that if you have 4GB , using 32bit OS, it can not fully use up all' ,
If they do that, ROFL, people will hardly try to go over 2GB. At least, having 4GB will be better than 2GB. Thats all.
This theory simply is same as HDD claiming 300GB -> ~270GB Why? again, any binary storage devices can NOT go 10^x, but only 2^x.
Same crap goes with network speed, in network, they use 10^x, etc -

40yrs? thats long!. I presume you are not a grand father?
I suppose your work also related with computers?? I seriously think 40yrs of computer experience is awesome.
anyway,
As for me, I get more angry and pissed at people on the forum who ask for a question, with a very simple setence without any proper descriptions.
such as "I bought XXX, and my system keeps crashing, I don't know why"
or, "I used to be able to play xxxx or run xxxx, now It doesn't run anymore" period.
If I were them (which is unlikely), then I'd at least explain whole procedures of wtf I did, what exact system, the crash message, etc, etc,.
anyway, I've also watched almost all Geroge Carlin's show, but Im not sure when he said about "If you think there's a solution, you're part of the problem." ? Do you know which year/show that was?
cheers -
ScuderiaConchiglia NBR Vaio Team Curmudgeon
Yeah, I know what you mean about the "clueless" who say my computer won't _____. (Fill in the blank). No OS info. No program info. No hardware info. And then "bump" the message hourly when no one responds.
Re: Mr. Carlin, no I don't know when that was. But I just love the quote in my signature.
Cheers,
Gary
P.S. Sorry if I came off as a bit gruff. I just read my reply to you and it could have been construed in one of two ways. Hope you DIDN'T take it as gruff. 'Twas not intended to be. Trust me, you'll know when I am GRUFF. ...big ol' grin... -
OK ok hey zerodays and scuder
I bought it to test it out and to see if i liked it. We are a graphically intensive design firm and want something that is slick and fast, the sony had this. We looked at Dell and said, ugly and the reviews... ok so I asked sony about ten times what version of Vista they had they kept telling me Business then I had to be more specific and asked them the os bit and the same damn answer everytime.
I bought it to check it out, We are most likely going with the acer Ferrari. we are going to replace the logo on it with our company logo too.
Too bad for sony I guess but i really liked the carbon fiber casing. The Tz only had onboard GPU and if they had a pci type of add on GPU that would have been freakin awesome.
I was only venting regarding sony. But i would like to say
Why would they offer a SZ series with 4gb ram when 32bit can only run upto 3.5gb. Kinda misleading. i just hope they come out with proprietary drivers. Until this time my son is sure enjoying his new laptop. -
Then don't. But don't blame Sony because YOU didn't do YOUR homework before you bought the machine. All of your complaints were clearly known in advance if only you had bothered to look.
Gary[/QUOTE]
I did a month of homework. The little things dont bother me like MStick i was venting. But what bothers me is SONY and their site that doesnt give hardly any specs. Their customer service. Oh and y do you even care? I was talking to synthesia. 2200.00 for a system is just another business expense to me. so It is continuing homework to buy it and look at it. Besides my son really loves it. I think the Acer Ferrari is far more superior. -

Ok. I guess what i am also addressing is that they might have intentions to offer or allow for 64 bit. Which again many of us can agree would be fabulous!

Thanks for your input gary
