Could someone explain it to me? I'm a graduate student working on a lot of public WiFi networks, as well as home networks. Can I have both channels enabled simultaneously - might they interfere with each other, or draw battery power more? Any ideas?
thanks!

good question

Wireless G operates at 2.4 GHz, and Wireless N operates at 2.4 and 5.0 GHz.
2.4 GHz will interfere with cordless phones and microwaves, but usually not noticeably. 5.0 GHz doesn't interfere with much. -
Also N is much faster and the range is much better...
If you have a compatible laptop (US SZ or TZ) then go for it! -
You can use WLAN to disable 5ghz if you know the router your using doesnt broadcast at 5ghz. The utility tells you they interfere with one another. I noticed i have a more stable signal and transfer rate with just one activated. My router is a basic n and so the max i can achieve is 130mbps through 2.4ghz.
Always keep in mind that unles you're sharing the wifi and/or transfering files wirelessly over this network, that the hard line (cat 5/6) only operates at a max of 100mbps.
By deactivating one of the frequencies you can reduce chances of interference within the card itself, unless you have a router broadcasting at both frequencies in which you can benifit from speed/range. Using one frequency may save some power too, but that is very debatable.
The difference between 2.5 and 5 GHz wireless
