Really good price...to make sure I configured the same exact config and sure enough it was $1399...so @ newegg u can get it for $200 less AND save on tax.

This is really tempting...I've already ordered my CTO from Sony and really want the T9400 though...hmm decisions decisions

Hmm, this is tempting, i would prefer the 320g 5400rpm hd though, more space, less power, and pretty much the same performance

I can save $327.33 if I cancel my SonyStyle order and order this...the 2 things I sacrifice, 1) T9400 CPU & 2) No refunds or returns @ newegg (unless its an exchange if its defective)

    hmmm

Congratulations on taking a decision. :p

I'm sure you made the right choice: the bigger footprint will be a small price to pay for the screen size, as you said you never take it out of the house anyway! ;)

For $327.33? I would do it.

Lots of folks bought their SRs from Newegg without any problems. And I'd rather have the P8600, personally.

P.S. -- just got my order confirmation from Newegg. :)

Thanks, Infy! And yes, I think you're right.

BTW, part of the reason for my "not making a decision" was 'cause I've been waiting for the new Dell XPS models to come out. But I read just last night that Dell will not be coming out with true XPS any longer... so the timing on this FW deal was perfect. :)

If I return the WD Scorpio Black 7200RPM HD I bought to replace the stock one with...that's another $107 I save for a total of $434.

Anyone know what 7200RPM drive comes with the FW and how it measures up to the Scorpio Black?

Congratulations! :) I'm pretty sure you will enjoy it.

Not sure. I've seen SR series with Hitachi 7K200. That's quite close in performance to the Scorpio black.

Other 200GB/7200 will be a bit slower.

Depending on what you'll be using it for, I think the lower power rating of the P series (25W vs 35W) makes it more attractive for battery powered PCs. The T9400 has more cache and a marginally faster clock speed, so if you don't mind taking the battery life hit, the T series is faster therefore better.

Personally I'd go for the P8600, because it's more than fast enough for my uses and I value the lower power consumption.

That's my take on it, anyway. ;)

My current laptop is an 80GB 4200 RPM. The 200GB 7200 RPM will be like lightning to me. :)

As you can see the P8600 takes 48 seconds to perform the SuperPI job while the T9400 takes 43 seconds. Mind you this is a calculation that probably benefits from the higher amount cache of the T9400. This means when you're doing CPU intensive jobs like maths, decoding/encoding video, zippping and unzipping the T9400 will be between 5% to 10% faster than the P8400.

This difference will only be there when the CPU is being fully utilized. Something that rarely happens for the average user, including me. In normal use there will not be any difference.

In my opinion people often invest too much money in getting the fastest CPU, while neglecting their harddrive, memory and OS (clean install) choice.

P8600 runs at 25 watt which would mean less heat and more battery life than T9400, although I have not seen this confirmed yet.

Thanks for the info...I went ahead and canceled my SS order (its still in processing but they said Ill find out via email in 24-48 hours if they can actually cancel it in case its "too far along"...whatever we'll see) and placed my order with newegg.

I have 4GB coming from new egg as well as the 7200 Scorpio...I may still install the Scorpio depending on the 7200 that comes with the laptop.

So at the very least I saved over $327 by doing this plus the money Ill make from selling the stock RAM & HD (or returning the Scorpio if I decide to)

thanks for the help and input everyone

It looks like i can probably get at least $100 for my old laptop on ebay too.
I'm just trying to milk my current lap to the last drop to get all it's money worth out of it, you think sony will add any other options in the coming months?

Hi guys, I got a question for you guys if you guys can be honest with me:

Im buying this laptop for school so main thing for me is battery Life.

I have bought a FW here in Canada from Futureshop. (140D)
My brother is coming here from the states and I could ship this model to him but couple of things first:

    1) Im impressed with teh screen I have, its better than most laptops i have seen, maybe some of the LED's are better, but im assuming xbrite-eco The colors pop really nicely, but You guys give alot of props to the High color screen but im assuming it kills quite a bit of battery... Is this true?

    2) I have the P8400 comparing to P8600 im assuming they have the same power usage but I dont think the 0.14 mhz would be any difference lol..

    3) I have the 250GB 5400 RPM, Would the bigger platter on this drive be close to a 200 GB 7200 rpm? and lastly Im assuming 7200 RPM drives would kill battery life too- would this be worth it?

Price wise I paid 1099+taxes (1235 CDN) for the laptop I have
this one is 1199+exchange rate (1330 CDN)

For 100 bucks im assuming im pretty much getting the hi color screen, but If it kills battery life Id rather not get it-
I have a great PC at home and wont be using this for movies/editing pictures etc pretty much for school/web/ and some RTS games and WoW.

Also as far as other points I like about this Laptop vs the one i have,
On my Laptop its got the stupid French/English keyboard so its cluttered with stupid letters and french (no offense to the french, I just dont need it lol), and I like the black keyboard on the newegg model.

But I like the White model better than the Grey model, I dont know if the newegg is grey or white.
    Thanks for your guys input.

the main thing for you is battery? dont even consider the FW....if you absolutely want to get the FW the extended battery is a necessity.

1 review I read got 1 1/2 hours of battery...another review got a little under 2...battery life is pretty abysmal

    Yeah, I agree.

Speaking of the extended battery, anyone know where to get one for less than Sony charges? I don't know yet if I'll want one, but if I do, $250 for a battery is just nuts.

Im getting 3 hrs on one charge with mine.
And I love the Huge workspace. I dislike small screens, but really love the slim profile this laptop has

So im assuming the Hi color and whatnot contributes to this.

    Sure thing...

    Western Digital Scorpio Black WD1600BEKT 160GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136278

Arguably the best 7200 notebook drive out there...I bought the 160GB cause I only need about 30GB on my laptop (I only store OS and apps I use). If you need space then the 320GB version of this drive is only $179 which I think is a steal: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136280

    OCZ 4GB (2 x 2GB) 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227251

For the RAM I went with the highest customer rated, and although it was $82 theres a $25 mail in rebate to bring it down to $57...quite a deal!

MUCH THANKS to GuanYu for posting this. I ordered one from Sonystyle earlier this week of the same configuration but with the base 160MB HD and 2GB memory (Newegg didn't have the Hi color at that time). I was planning on upgrading the HD and mem myself.

Last night Sony sent me notice that it had shipped. I went on the Sony sight this morning and got a RMA and then went to Newegg and ordered this one. The one from Sony is going back as soon as it gets here. They may arrive the same day if Newegg ships mine today.

Saved a bunch o money, and now I don't have to do any upgrades thanks to GuanYu!!!

I'm confused... The FW we ordered already comes with a 200gb 7200 (Toshiba, I think). Is the WD 160GB 7200 really that much better? Enough to justify $107 plus the time involved in swapping drives?

Similar question: since the FW we ordered comes with 3gb of ram, isn't that good enough?

And, if it's not, would it make more sense to just buy a single 2gb sim, then replace the existing 1gb sim with the 2gb?

Personally I'd never mix and match RAM nowadays... it's cheap enough that it's not worth the potential compatibility problems. Just buy a matched kit and you know you're going to get dual channel etc working OK.

    1) I just prefer to have the best drive available...although they are both 7200rpm performance can still greatly differ between drives

    2) 3GB (2 + 1) can't run in dual channel mode...2 + 2 does, and I didn't want to mix & match brands which I why I didn't just add another 2GB stick to the included 2GB

Is the mixing RAM thing really a huge concern? I bought the 2 GB OCZ deal, but if there are going to be problems I have a day to order the 4 GB one instead and still get the rebate.

There is also a great deal at sonystyle right now. You can add 3gb of ram for free, a 200gb hard drive upgrade for free, AND a free copy of Office student edition. I was seriously considering the Newegg offer but the sonystyle one seems more compelling because of the return policy. I priced out a system with hi-color, ati graphics, 3gb ram, 200gb hdd, P8400 and the free office and the total is 1209.99 which is just 10 bucks more than newegg.
