What's happening is that when I hit certain keys while typing the cursor will jump to an entirely different position. It appears to happen with certain keys but is sporadic.

I don't believe it's software related because if I boot from a LIVE LINUX CD the problem persists. I have also used the recovery partition and it's still flaky.

I just want a few opinions to confirm my suspicions.

PS; I've also popped of a lot of the affected keys and cleaned under them. Notebook is 3.5 years old.

    Thanks

If you are comfortable with a little bit of disassembly, you may try buying a replacement keyboard for a few bucks off ebay and seeing if it is a connector issue of sometype either in the relay patch cable or the circuitry of the keys and keyboard assembly.

Yeah, I would try that. If replacing it doesn't solve the problem nor a system reformat back to the factory image/original install, then you may be talking about something giving out on the motherboard.

This might be a shot in the dark... but are you sure it's the keyboard and not the touchpad? I know that I can sometimes accidentally make the cursor jump by brushing the touchpad as I'm typing.

Perhaps try disabling the touchpad - use a mouse or whatever - and see if you still get the problem... ;)

That was one of the first things I tried, unfortunately it wasn't that. Thanks for the suggestion however..
