Since you are going to be multi-tasking, Dual Core is the way to go.

Among 14" notebooks, the Asus W3J and HP dv2000t come to mind. The W3J is quite expensive, but comes with the excellent X1600 dedicated graphics card. The dv2000t is cheaper, and comes with the less powerful Go 7200 card. Both are stylish and look good, with the Asus having the edge in terms of build quality. However, since you wont be gaming, the dv2000t is the better option.

The Toshiba Satellite M100 is another decent 14" notebook. Other 14" models to consider are the Dell Inspiron E1405, and the Sony Vaio FJ series.

Among 15"/16" notebooks, you have several options - HP dv5000t, Toshiba Satellite A100, Sony Vaio FE and FS series, and the Dell Inspiron E1505. Sony Vaios are more expensive and generally have better build quality. All these models can be configured to suit your requirements.

Here is my advice. Get a notebook with integrated Intel graphics. Since you won't be gaming at all, you don't need a dedicated video card. Integrated graphics gives you better battery life and less heat.

A dedicated graphics card is highly recommended for Vista.

The Vaio SZ comes with both Intel graphics and a Geforce 7400, so that may be worth considering. You basicly select which you want to use each time you start up, based on whether you'd rather have graphics power or battery life.
