I have a Vaio VGN-CS215J. I would like to know who manufactured the touchpad I have, but I keep getting mixed messages.
The drivers, device manager, and sony's support site all list the synaptics drivers, but when I did lsusb in Ubuntu, I got this in the list:
How do I find out for sure?Code:ID 044e:3017 Alps Electric Co., Ltd

Go into the Vaio control center and bring it up there.

I pull up VAIO control center and it doesn't give me any more information. This is what I see.

why don't you test it and see if some of the other synaptics software works on it. http://www.synaptics.com/sites/default/files/SynThZip2.zip

Well that game seems to work fine....
I'm so confused.... -
Here is another one that works off of the touchpad.

I also use an application called scribe on my XP that works with any version of synaptics driver and makes it very easy to access web sites browsers and other functions when I do not have a mouse handy. If these utilities work on your laptop then I would say it is a synaptics touchpad. When I go into control panel on my computer and click onto mouse it tells me what touchpad I have. -
Okay, I did a few things, and here's what happened.
First, I downloaded that little app. It worked great.
Then, I downloaded and installed Scrybe from Synaptic to try. Everything installs fine and it seems to be working. But, it doesn't. If I go into the touchpad properties in device manager, it lists a newer driver number. If I go to the last panel of the mouse properties, it lists two devices instead of one. One, is my original "Synaptics TouchPad V7.0" The new one is called "Synaptics ControlBar V7.2" If I disable the new one, nothing happens, but if I disable the original TouchPad one, my touchpad stops working. If I click on settings on the new ControlBar entry, a broken-looking window pops up that gives me an error when I click on it.
It seems like my computer just can't use any other Synaptics Driver than that stinky default one.
Again, I'm so confused....
Thanks for the help so far reb1!Attached Files:

Completely uninstall scribe and the synaptics program. I use revo uninstaller to do this. Go to the synaptics web site and download and install the most current synaptics software program I believe it is version 14. something. After install and reboot if everything checks out than reinstall the scribe program. This worked out on my XP with the only exception being I had to use the shift+control key option to use scribe.
