    Has anyone ever did this?
I put in my specs on sonys site and it says i can get around 200, but you don't really know the real amount till they look at it.

Or you could sell it for much more than $200.

Seriously, those trade in programs are a rip off.

Eurocom offers a trade-in program, and their website offers 10% discount for traded in desktop, and 20% discount for laptops; that is if your system meets their minimum specifications. The discount is applied towards your new purchase.

In my case, trading in my old laptop would technically get me a discount of approx. $365, making the M860TU (with a 9800m GT) i'm looking at cost me the same as an older Dell XPS 1530 (with an 8600m GT).... quite the bargain!

....that's all technically speaking though: the rep only offered me 10% for trading in my laptop...my laptop is worth more than $180...

Well, my Toshiba's hinges are broke, battery won't last more than 30 minutes, and the CPU cooling has degraded to a point that I have to underclock the CPU so it won't overheat and crash. And oh, my charger is taped together.

And yet, Sony can still offer me about $180 + $50 bonus = about $230 for it. Of course it all depends on how much they actually give me.

I bought a qualifying used Dell laptop on ebay for $150.
Traded it in to Sony for $450 under their Trade Up and Go Promo.
That's $300 net discount off a Sony laptop (SZ7 for me).

I don't know. It seemed to work pretty well for me

Seriously, if you are considering a Z, SR, BZ or an older SZ, TZ or BX, the Trade Up and Go Pro 4 program is sweet.

    $450 for a qualifying Dell
    $300 for any other manufacturer

There is a minimum processor requirement (basically Pentium 4 or better, but there are some limits), and the notebook has to work and boot to Windows, but I know that a ton of people have used it to get great deals on notebooks. (i.e. on some of the BX close outs, I had customers buying a new VAIO BX for $699, trading in an old Dell and efectivly getting a new VAIO for $250!)

When you trade in an old notebook to get a discount, does it have to be the same brand as the company you are buying from?

no, sony will take any brand of laptop and they have an extensive list of brands and model # and if its not there just put in you laptops specs and they'll give you a estimate

can you please tell me how this worked exactly? i want to buy a cheap dell laptop from ebay or craigslist but i'm scared of these requirements:

"A sales invoice is required for professional products and preferred for IT products. Also acceptable for IT products only is a packing slip, which must include your name, the purchase date, purchase amount, model and serial number(s). The following are NOT acceptable forms of proof of purchase: purchase orders, order confirmations, and order acknowledgements."

and the fact that they want all appropriate manuals power cords etc...

if i buy on ebay, how am i going to get acceptable proof of purchase?

edit - nevermind. this particular trade up program isn't available for the CTO models. i emailed them and this is what they said:

"Currently, the Sony Trade Up & Go Pro 4 Promotion is designed for trading in eligible pre-owned notebook and purchase a new eligible Sony VGNBX700, VGN-SZ, VGN-TX or VGN-TZ Series model. The purchase item is not eligible if it is not listed on our website. We regret that the Sony VGNZ590CTO is not an eligible purchase for this promotion.

You may wish to participate in the Standard Trade-In Program. Please visit the trade in program website at hxxp://sony.tradeups.com and click on “Get A Free Quote” to get an instant trade in value on your item. Then you would click on “Return to Standard Trade-In.”"
