Hi guys, so I was trying to read my SD card and I tried the Vaio Memory Card Adapter VGP-MCA20 for the first time. The computer recognizes it as UMH U09 but fails to install drivers. I looked here and google for it with no luck. How have you guys gotten your multi card reader to work? Shouldn't it just be plug and play? Much appreciated.

I just bought the Vaio 460N/C 2 months ago and I had lots of troubles getting the drivers for VISTA, not to mention many existing softwares do not work in VISTA as well.
I was trying to use the memory card adapter the first time and the Vaio prompts for installing driver, I was unable to locate the proper driver on SONY support site or within the VISTA driver database. I had called SONY support and spoke to their level 7 tech support twice (highest level of techs according to them) and no one seems to able to help.
The have no idea of what is UMH-U09, and the tech said they will have the engineers look into this problem and get back to me.
Well, it has been 2 weeks, I am still waiting for them to call me back. Anyone here have similar experiences? -
Finally figure out how to get the memory card adapter driver installed by myself.
It is very simple, it works on my VISTA business Vaio and I think it should be similar to XP.
My way to get it to work:
After I inserted the card adapter and when the Windows asked for a driver, select the recommended option, then it should prompt for no driver found, and you can select "I have no disk and show me other option" option, then ask the windows to browse the c:\windows\ folder (with subfolders option checked) and windows should be able to locate all the drivers for you. It takes like 10 mins before all the drivers installed (it needs to install 4 drivers, that's means you need to do this 4 times).
I am just wondering WHY Vista does not able to locate it by itself and I have to manually point it to c:\windows to complete the installation. I have tried to ask windows to look for drivers within c:\windows\inf or c:\windows\drivers folder with unsucessflu results.
I hope this help the other fellows who seem to have similar problems as me. -
Same here, It won't work no matter what type of flash memory is inserted. But after try uninstall/install driver for a while (fastorange's method does help), It works!! ,but with the MS only.
When I try to push SD card in and open the drive in My Computer, It freeze my Windows Explorer.
My vista recognize it as "Sony USB HS-CARD USB Device" at first (automatically) but it won't read anything at that time.
After uninstall/install some driver, it appears that this device and MS Pro Duo slot is base on "Texas Instruments PCIxx12 Integrated FlashMedia Controller" driver.
My vista recognize another FlashMedia drive besides MS Pro Duo and the Memory Card Adapter, shown as "SD / MMC" this device won't work neither. When I push the SD into the Memory Card Adapter and try to open it, It tell me to insert disc.
Is there a hidden SD slot in SZ?
Any idea how to get it work? -
I remembered i have to install 4 drivers for the card adapter (2 for MS and 2 for SD) -
Much Appreciated, -
So, I wouldn't know where the windows is getting the drivers from, but I m assuming from c:\windows\system32 (i know this might not be the prefer way to get a driver, but I m tried of no access to my data which stores on the memory cards.
I inserted the memory adapter in my laptop with a SD card inside, I got these:
USB HS-CARD under Portable Devices
Microsoft WPD FileSystem Volume Driver under Portable Devices
USB Mass Storage Device under Universal Serial Bus Controllers
USB Composite Device under Universal Serial Bus Controllers
I got you some screenshots here too.Attached Files:

No way for me. I have the same problem but I can't fix it: the HS-CARD id recognized but when I try to access the card which is in it, it freezes.
I have the same drivers as fastorange i.e. 6.0.6000.16386
If I try to reinstall them, it says that the lastest version is already installed. -
I also realised that the USB HS-CARD appears also in "Disk Devices".

You have to make sure you have all the drivers installed, the memory card adapter can take MS and SD, so, each one has 4 drivers to install IIRC, so, there are 8 drivers need to be installed. If you missed any of them, i don't think it will work correctly.
Did you try to remove the HS-card device drivers under device manager ad reinstall it again? Click on the balloon on the right lower corner when it said hardwares found, searching for drivers, it will bring up another window which will show you the entire process of drivers installation. This way you can get all the drivers installed before you try to use it.
Sometimes, if you have a bad card, it will freezes the computer too. -
The thing is when I uninstall it and then plug it again, Vista says "new hardware" and then directly "ready to use"

Hi art5,
I hope somebody will help us. As far as Im concerned, I still have the problem and can't solve it ! I tried everything said here, I downloaded all the drivers from Sony site but no result. I think I will give up -
I think I m lucky, mine works fine after I figured out how to locate the right drivers and I have nothing wrong with my VAIO so far.
But please keep us posted on this issue, I have a feeling it might happen to me if I do a fresh install of Vista down the road -
I realized that under Linux (Ubuntu) the card rader doesn't work either ! Doesn't this mean that my card reader is just broken ?
Thx

I've just unsinstalled the drivers using Driver Genius software and now Windows can't find anydrivers
Fastorange, would you mind trying to backup your drivers and sending them to me ? You can extract your drivers easily with DriverGenius or DriverMax software.
Thanks, Tex. -

Thank you for the drivers but unforunatly it didn't help. The installation process goes well but after this, I have the same problem. I can't access the card :s Maybe I'll try to contact Sony to ask for a new card ready but I guess it won't be easy either.
-
Hello again,
I went to a shop to try my card adapter on another VAIO and it doesn't work either. The device is recognized but where I insert the card, nothing happens. The guy from the shop told me that it's because my card is SD "High Speed 60x" and not a usual SD card. Do you think this might be the reason ? -
I tried also with a normal SD card and it's the same.
-
I have a Vaio sz370p, and Im
Having same issue here. I take the sd card out of my canon elph. Insert it into slot. Windows sees the memory card (as it shows the name). When I double click on the icon, or try to browse, the system hangs. And freezes. Till I take the card out. Its a pqi highspeed 60 card. I can however just hook my camera up via usb and transfer the files. But it would be oh so nice to use the memory card slot on this 2000$ laptop o' mine. *sigh* I hope someone can find a fix.

OK, I have a Sony VGN FE770G, and am continuing to have these same problems with being unable to locate the drivers for the UMH_U09. After several hours on the phone with Sony (their tier 2 tech support.....please my kids know more about computers, and their knowledge is limited). They said that my adapter was faulty, so they sent me a new one....same problem...... They then said that my motherboard was defective, so they sent a technician to my house to replace the motherboard...still same problem...... Now they want me to ship my computer to them (after telling me average work time for this was 7-10 working days)
can anyone help me to locate the drivers needed to attempt a manual install before I have to send off my computer to these clowns?
Thank You in advance for any help I may recieve , this is driving me nuts! -
Hi everybody,
finally I contacted Sony via the e-support and we tried to solve the problem with a technician without success. We proceeded to an exchange of the card reader adaptor and now it works ! So it was obviously a hardware issue.
regards,
Tex. -
i v got the driver for vista, send me an email and i will replay whit attachment.
