My VGN-C190 notebook is having issues starting up. Every time I turn it on, it goes to that black screen (not sure what it's really called) that comes up when your system was abruptly shut off. I choose to load at the last working configurations and it tries to start it up, but it ends up going back to that same black screen. I've tried all the other options (safe mode, boot up normally, etc.) but it just goes in circles.

Any idea on what's wrong? Thanks.

Time for system repair or re-install. It is hard to guess at this time since it could be drivers and/or hardware.

agree with Padme, need more info...have you tired the disable automatic restart from F8? any error codes produce might offer some insight...could also be a failing HDD...keep us in the know.

    Cheers!

    Thanks.

I've tried disabling automatic restart on system failure with F8, which brought me to which OS I want to start with... which is XP Media Center Edition, so I select it. This brings me to a blue screen. The top line reads:

"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer

    UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME"

then a bunch of instructions that don't work, then, at the end:

    *** STOP: 0x000000ED (0x86FE7698, 0xC000009C, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

I guess I have to just get a repair.

Also, I just cleaned the vents out but the fan still blows out hot air and the vent itself feels hotter... I don't see much of a difference at all from when it was clogged with dust to now.

Hmm... My Dad had an issue like this with his used Dell laptop he bought recently. He tried re-installing XP and Repairing, but ultimately he had to buy a new HDD for the laptop and installed XP.

If neither work, just as a suggestion, then your best bet is to get a new HDD that will work with your laptop (they are pretty cheapish now).

Also, about the vents thing, did the laptop itself get really hot before you cleaned it? Like, Did the side or parts of the laptop get hot after being used for a while? Did it improve that at all if so?

I agree with Moogles about the hard drive. You can also try to perform a chkdsk in safe mode and see if there are errors and try to repair them.

from XP boot CD running repair and at cmd prompt run chkdsk /p...usually fixes this issue.
