I am a complete novice when it comes to networking, so I only hope I can ask the right questions. I have a VAIO PCG-5J2L. When I go to Start and Networking from the VAIO, I see my desktop computer listed and can go to the files I have marked for sharing. When I try to do the same from my desktop, my laptop is not listed. I am using Netgear wirless networking. Where should I start troubleshooting? Thanks.

Make sure you're sharing a folder on both machines. Also, check any firewalls you have installed to make sure that you have approved/trusted your home network. Try rebooting one machine, waiting five minutes, rebooting the other machine, wait another five minutes and then retry your attempt to view shares both ways.

Windows networking can behave a little strangely sometimes, because each machine can be the 'server' and keep a list of machines in the workgroup. And that's once you've got everything connected to the network properly.

If you still don't have any joy, try viewing Properties for your wireless network connection on both machines and check that they've been assigned an IP address via DHCP and not "automatic IP address".

Hopefully some of the above might help. ;)
