Turning on the power to Sony F with lid closed

    Hello all,

So I'm having a difficulty that I hope someone can help me with. I'm trying to set up my new Vaio F notebook computer so that it can turn on with the lid closed. One of the nice things about the F (one of the reasons I bought it) was because the power button is on the outside is should be easy to turn it on with the lid closed (I live on a sailboat and want to hard mount it to a wall and use it as a desktop replacement- I am sending the video signal to a 32" Sharp LCD television).

Anyway I have messed with all the power settings and none of them let me change this part. Basically I can get the notebook's screen to turn off easy enough with the lid closed and I can set the computer to stay on with the lid closed- but no settings I can find can change whether or not the power button works with the lid closed.

Anyone have any ideas? Is there a way to set a remote start from a keyboard or something if you can't change the power button setting? Any help would greatly be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    -Levin

Figure out where the lid-closed sensor and or magnet are. Remove the magnet. System will then always think the lid is open.

There is definitely no software way to enable powering on using the Power button while the LID is closed. I am sure Sony did not consider your type of usage ;)

I was actually afraid they might have allowed this, as when I put the laptop in my bag I would not want it to power itself on :)

As suggested - you can either trick the notebook that the LID is open (by tweaking the hardware) OR as you have thought of - find a way to power on / wake up the computer by a mouse or keyboard movement!

The second is possible for sure if you just put it to sleep. It can be waken up by a mouse movement I believe.

However, I don't think there is a way to do that if the PC is powered off.

    Hello there again,

So this is what I figured, sounds like there is no way to tell the computer to turn on with the lid closed from a hardware standpoint, but it sounds like it might be possible to "trick" the computer into thinking the lid is open by changing a magnet.

Does anyone know how exactly the computer senses the lid is closed? If it is a magnet perhaps by breaking the connection somehow between the magnet and the sensor the computer would think it was open. I'm thinking something thin and led that would go between the sensor and still allow me to essentially close the lid.

If anyone knows the position of this sensor in the F model and how it works I would really appreciate the help.

    Thanks so much,
    -Levin
