But the price is too much.Plus it has an external dvd drive.

My initial thoughts as well.... BUT -- the direction technology is headed suggests we won't need a DVD burner on a regular basis in the future -- and with that much storage (plus what we could put in the ProDuo, SDHC and ExpressCard slots) seems to me that virtually anything I would want to have with me could be stored on the computer, eliminating the need for an onboard DVD burner. As for price..... it's a Sony!
-
So would you buy it at this point? I feel like I would want a dvd burner. I called a couple stores today and no one has the tz195. Would you buy it now or wait a week or two to see if the price comes down, now that the 198 is out?
-
Yay, we get the 64gb SSD and 5400rpm hard drive.........at an insane cost!!!
We've also got the white model now.

seems like such a better idea to get a cheapie model then buy an aftermarket 64gb ssd... would save at least 1k right?
-
zkaudio -nope. Try finding a 64GB SSD, let alone one that isn't at least $1000. The Japanese version is a touch cheaper, but that price is going rate.
Personally, if I'm getting the TZ at that price, I'm getting the 10th anniversary edition in Japan. -
sry, link to the 10th anniversary edition?
-
Is it the tz91 with 64 mb ssd? It is a little cheaper and it looks like it has the int. dvd drive. Is that right fender?
http://www.dynamism.com/tz90/pricing.shtml
But it only has 1 gb RAM. It's $299 to upgrade it to 2 gb RAM.
Toshiba is coming out with a 64 gb ssd also.
http://www.dynamism.com/rx1/main.shtml -
And Toshiba's screen is considerably inferior to the TZ's, so no comparison. -
Any link to this anniversary model? Googling the 10th anniversary it comes out the TZ90.
Edit: Never mind, found it...
http://www.newlaunches.com/archives/sony_vaio_t_series_10th_anniversary_model.php
I found this model T much more uglier than the TZ! -
To each his own. The 10th anniversary also has all three batteries, the leather case, etc. It's actually decent value for the money if you can afford it.
But you can get a regular TZ from Dynamism which is cheaper than the US one. -
the tz91, right? But does it have an int. dvd drive?
[VGN-TZ91/64ss/DVD/Anniversary] Sony (Intel Core 2 Duo U7600 1.2 GHz, 64GB solid state HD, DVD±R DL, 1GB RAM, light-weight battery, standard battery, bulk battery pack, Fingerprint Reader, English Vista Home Premium, 10th Anniversary Limited Edition includes: Violet Premium Carbon casing, all 3 battery options, Bluetooth laser mouse, and leather carrying case) -
You can configure it with or without the drive.
Considering (by Dynamism's list prices) the two batteries alone (extended and the big one) would run you close to $700 alone - let alone the leather slipcase and the mouse, and the fact it's limited edition which Sony is charging more for anyway - the $4400 isn't bad considering the normal one with the 64GB SSD is about $3600. -
And we need to remember that the Japanese Z series lacks the WWAN (at least one that works in the US).
-
Oh I didnt know that Bruce. So I could not use verizon mobile broadband with the tz91?
-
If they sell an Expresscard/34 or USB powered EV-DO card, you could use Verizon.
-
Yes -- I believe any ExpressCard (or USB) WWAN adapter will work, but that means another device to haul around and plug-in, and Sony's software utility won't work with it. It's been my chief reason for not going for the Japanese Z series -- that plus the limitation on having to have it serviced in Japan.
-
Why Sony's software utility will not work with an ExpressCard? -
I called Dynamism and they said that the pcm or pmc card will not work with the tz91. I would be limited to the usb port or the express card. I know the usb costs $219 from verizon, and you are right on the additional price, bruce. It starts to add up. They also said the tz91 is one of the most popular models that they sell in the us, but I cannot get the optional breakage insurance, although they do cover for 3 yr. standard warranty. I need to find out from sony if the tz195 has the pmc slot for verizon wireless. They are working up a price quote on the tz91 with the 64 ssd, 2 gb ram, so I will see. It is now between the two computers -the tz195 or the tz91 with 64 gb ssd, depending on dynamism's cost.
-
All TZs have ExpressCard only. The G series has the PCMCIA slot.
-
how is the data transfer rate over an express card slot over the sata or ata connect they use to connect the ssd?
-
I just wish that Sony would release this in any other color but Boredeaux (my mispelling
).
Then again, someone ordered a Bordeaux TZ on this forum and liked it, but I can't remember who it was. -
bordeaux is SICK
-
-
anything but black seems ugly on this model
-
-
-
for some reason white always makes me think of those hideous inspirons from dell
-
wow!! this is what i wanted all along, a hybrid with DVD drive but whoa its expensive
-
Maybe buy from this seller on Ebay?

-
He has the same pics for all his TZ auctions, ripped straight from Outtrigger's NBR review of his TZ.
He told me he also has the new white TZ185N/WC. -
-
Your last TZs were imported CTO TZ90s. You don't want to go that route again because of support and WWAN?
-
But I would have to install XP myself -- I have to go back, Vista is just too slow -- but since I have to remove all that bloatware, it's one combined task. -
Yes I spoke with him also. He seems legitimate and answered all my questions. The problem with the TZ198, if I understand it right, is that it does not have an internal dvd, which is why I am looking at the tz91.
-
- 100GB 4200rpm Hard Drive/DVD drive (slowest but cheapest)
- 32/48/64GB SSD/DVD drive or 200GB hard disk (fastest way to run Vista; but either version has downsides)
- 200GB HD drive only (plenty of hard disk space, but no SSD; sensible choice but you need to buy an external DVD drive as some models above)
The TZ198 is the 64GB SSD/200GB configuration. That's a spectacular amount of storage, particularly for a subnotebook like TZ-size models, unheard of before the TZ. And SonyStyle includes an external DVD drive with TZ198, so it does come with one, just not onboard. Of course, it does cost a whopping $4000.
If you like to watch movies on the plane, this configuration would not be attractive from a portability standpoint, but if you have a lot of music and movies on your hard disk, the TZ198, and similar TZ91 models, simply can't be beat.
I think for what you seem to be looking for, which is fast performance and a built-in DVD drive, get the TZ91 64SSD/DVD for $3550. You can get a white one in 10 days too. -
Yes, Ubercool, that is exactly is what I am planning to order from dynamism, although maybe in carbon. They have some in white on there way in and they said I should have it a week from Wed. if I order Monday. I am really excited! The alternative is to order the tz198 from the guy on ebay, but I think it comes with an external dvd drive?
-
Yes, the TZ198 has an external DVD drive included because the 2.5" 200gb HDD takes the place of the DVD drive in addition to the 64gb 1.8" SSD.
The Ebay user colpic said its included
-
It does come with an external DVD drive, because the TZ198 does not have a built-in DVD drive, as I described in my post above. -
Do I have to pay import duty when buying a computer from an eBay seller in Canada?
-
Tz198!
