WHAT!? Are you sure you got it with the 1080P (not the 900P) screen for that price? Where on Earth did you get it from!?

lovelaptops and requiem86, thanks for all your comments and amazing discussion! I was one of those guys who ordered those 999 refurb models. Should be in on 15th :)

Thanks also for the discussion on the warranty! I will seriously consider getting the square trade as soon as I get the laptop (its still possible for a few days right?).

Nice! yeah, but it looks like Sony warranty might actually be better than the square trade warranty. You have like 30 days to get a warranty after you get your laptop...once i get my refurb Z..ill research and see which warranty option is best for me...not sure yet.

FYI - I hope my Z doesn't have that buzzing noise i hear a few people are complaining about.

I got it from the outlet as a refurb. Looks like new though. The moment I saw it I snatched it up right away. And yes, it is 1080p, as confirmed by display properties in Windows 7.

Hi, i ordered a refurbished Z from the sony outlet like many of you after the underwhelming release of the SA. I ordered Saturday night, it arrived today and to my pleasure it is brand new, so good luck to the rest of you waiting on your Z's, i hope you are just as lucky as i was. I do have a few questions though, firstly, with the Z, i also purchased a 2 year ADH warranty, but received nothing regarding it in the box. Does the warranty come separate, or am i missing something? Second, i was wondering what you would recommend to increase the memory? I'm not too keen on replacing the DVD drive, and would prefer an exterior solution like a usb hard drive, but was wondering if there is a better option (i'm new to all of these fancy ports, so i'm not too sure what my options are). I'm really only looking to add at least 100GB for music and such, but would like the smallest possible solution as a dangle-y usb hard drive is no the most portable thing.

Thanks so much for any help!

i just got my VPCZ1390X today also! O man it looks brand new! I think im in love! the screen is amazing...and so far i haven't heard any "buzzing" noise that some people complained about...tho if i put my ear very close to the vent i can hear it.

I didn't get a warranty yet - but after seeing this laptop...im going to call sony up and get the 2 year ADH warranty. The local SonyStore doesn't sell just warranties (you have to buy a laptop from them) and Sqauretrade does offer ADH warranty on refurbs and gave me a quote more than Sony. But i will call sqauretrade again and see if i can haggle on price. FYI - i dont think you'll get an paper or document about your warranty...i think Sony just has it in there system..u might want to call and check tho.

Tsk5151 - memory usually refers to RAM...our Z's have 4gb, which is enough for most people, you can upgrade it to 8gb pretty easily..by buying some aftermarket ram, opening the back panel and sticking it in there. im 50/50 on whether i even need more ram for my usage.

As for more storage space, you can either buy like a big flash drive/external harddrive..I have a thin passport-size 500gb "Western Digital Passport"..im sure there are other solutions...i know there are like 128gb flash drives... also i think you can by a big memory card and just leave it inserted in the laptop...but im not really up to date on my storage option knowledge.

Yeah sorry for being unclear, by memory i did mean storage space, but i think a usb hard drive seems to be the best and most economic option... and damn your right, that screen sure does look amazing.

yeah usb is probably the most economical...or maybe a thin external hd.

memory card is probably the most ideal..since u can just insert it inside the laptop...nothing hanging or connected externally.

These are the noise cancelling headphones where the noise cancellation is done not on the headphone but on the laptop.

They are not needed for Z to function, but they need Z (or TT) to function as noise cancelling headphones.

So after using my Z for a while, it's pretty damn near perfect..so im going to skip all the pros...but here are my only complaints:

    Semi-Major Con:

    - the laptop does kinda hot near the vents. not extremely hot...but def. more than i'd like (i don't feel comfortable leaving it on my laptop for too long, because i feel like the vents are being choked/can't breath)..anyone else feel that way?? i find myself tilting the laptop for airflow...hmm...ill run a temp program to see exactly how hot it's getting...i might try to find a thin portable cooler as well...then again i only really noticed the heat when i started installing/updating software on the laptop...so it was kinda under "some" load...the fans also picked up and you could def. hear them whistle (compared to being almost silent in idle/low usage)...I used to have a Asus N43JF before i returned it..it was a little clunky laptop with a horrible keyboard, and mediocre screen...but man it ran soo cool...i never felt any heat whatsoever...but im pretty sure the amount of heat Z produces is pretty much industry standard....i think the Asus was just a rarity when it came to low heat/temps.

    Minor Cons:

    - The touchpad seems a little too sensitive sometimes... I've seen my cursor jump a few times... ill keep monitoring..i pretty sure i was accidentally hitting my palms on the touchpad...

    - Battery life is just ok, nothing special.

    - Speakers/sound quality aren't that great.

Overall, I'm extremely happy with the Z...couldn't find a more ideal laptop on the market (for my uses)...i'd give it a 90% rating (only real con: heat under load near vents, but not too bad).

What do you know, I have an Asus N43JF too! Got it because it's 14" and has a good graphics card. But the bezel's big so this thing's like a 15" to me :/

What was your usage scenario that led to high heat venting? Web surfing? Any intensive flash or video playing? Or lots of file copying?

If you boot it up and let it idle for a while, will the fan kick in?

Asus N43JF - is a beast of a laptop at 14" - I just didn't like the build quality especially with the keyboard and around the bezel/frame. Screen quality was actually pretty good, not the best..but not that bad tbh. It was a little thicker than I would of liked on 14" ...but wasn't that bad for me. Everything else was great. Hardware in that machine was stellar in 2010..and i was surprised at how cool it ran...i swear it ran cooler than room temp...lol

i updated my post..but when i was doing a lot of downloading/updating/install of windows, virus protection, and vaio software...the fan did speed up and you could hear it...i think for normal daily usage like web surfing or office...i think the temp/noise will be fine...just when you're using the cpu/gpu at load...it gets hot near vents and you start to hear the fan whistle.

FYI - no if you idle, fan will not go into jet mode (i hear some people have/had that issue, but i think that would be a defective fan/laptop if it did)...so you can't hear it. But under load, the fan really picks up and you can def. hear it whistle.

tehsupermeowmeow - did you also order a refurbished Z like some of us?

    yes, yes I did :D

my refurb Z is probably having fun on its long road trip en route to my house :D

I saw a new one with i7 and 1080p on ebay @ $2469 and based on the seller's selling history the price can be haggled down to $2.3k or so. I was soooo tempted to return my refurb and get that one instead but someone else got it this morning. oh well :/

I'd never get that ebay laptop for $2.3k+, especially if it's used..but even if its new condition.... the new Z be released soon is wayyyy better if you're going to spend that much money. Old Z model for $2.3k+ is totally not worth the price : performance ratio even with i7 and 1080p imo. i7 dual core vs. i5 dual core, isn't going to be thattt noticeable (if it was quadcore that's a different story, but still debatable depending on your usage)...im also not a fan of 1080p on a 13.1" screen...1600x900 is small enough...it's perfect...any smaller seems a little crazy to me...it would be hard to read certain things imo. $999 refurb Z with i5 is a great bang for buck...plus, its basically new!...its totally worth the price...$2.5k is def not imo. I'm a all or nothing guy...either get the best laptop for the lowest price ($999 refurb Z) or go all out and get the best laptop possible for a crazy high price (new Z for $2.3k+) ...$2.3k for an old Z sounds like a rip off to me..it doesn't really give you as much back for how much you're paying....unless you realllllly want 1080p on 13.3" screen and think its worth the $1.3k premium. i think it's a blessing in disguise that someone else got it... =)

I had my refurb 1290 and 1390 arrive today and both are mint! Somewhat of a bonus is the 1290 came with 8GB of memory, thats a nice suprise considering it said 4GB.

We all got great deals on these laptops. BTW requiem86, my 1390 shows 77.2GB of free space and my 1290 shows 84.2 GB free. 1290 came with less crap on it.

Also the WEI on the 1290 and 1390 are identical so the slight processor upgrade on the 1290 doesnt seem to make much effect.

lucky! 8gb ram..nice! I'm thinking about upgrading to 8gm myself..not sure i need it tho.

I think the 1390 has Win 7 Pro and 1290 has Win 7 Home...hence the storage space difference. I think i rather have Home and keep the space, o well, i think we were lucky enough to get these mint dream machines for $999, not complaining!

PS: Why did you buy 2?? for family member?

I bought 2 in case one was crap, I figured I would get one decent one, instead I got 2 mint machines... I just did a clean install on the 1290, have all drivers installed and its sitting at 103GB free. This is Windows 7 Ultimate x64. I recommend a clean install, its just speeds it up as well.

Got my refurb Z too! I am absolutely loving it, the screen is frigging spectacular and the piece is light as hell!

The only thing is that the screen shows these diagnol lines if I look very carefully. Glancing through the forum tells me that the problem is universal for all Zs? Or is it unit specific?

lol - i was just about to google that myself. Yup, mine has them too..i have noticed some diagonal lines but they are kinda hard to see depending on the background...Z display isn't desktop monitor quality....but its still the best damn screen i've ever seen on any laptop under 15". overall, this screen is awesome and we have nothing to worry about.

    Update:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/sony/400972-vaio-z-diagonal-lines-screen.html

It seems like ALOT of the Z's have this issue so maybe its normal...tomorrow, ill go check out a new Z at microcenter to compare...

hhhmmmm..that's weird...not sure why that is....o well...i can't complain about a $999 Vaio Z. It seems like a lot of people have those lines also....so, i don't think its considered a defect according to Sony...i guess i'll just live with it...not that its really THAT big of a deal.

Actually, that was my post and no, that company, Seneca, a.k.a. "Cheetahdeals.com" had a great deal, $850 for same config as the $999 models people have been buying from Sony lately. After an initial hiccup - remedied by a rather stern email I sent to all the execs of the company! - they are providing comprehensive support for the 90 days of the wtty, even replacing screens. Initially, they were only offering $ back. It's worth checking back from time to time, cheetahdeals.com is their retail web site, but a huge company, Seneca, is behind it, and they are the largest domestic refurb house and are exclusive for Acer, Gateway and a few other brands. Most of their work is wholesale, sell to online retailers who sell refurbs. I can hook anyone up who wants to speak to someone in mgt.

EDIT: Though I equivocate a bit on the post below, I would say, especially if Square Trade is offering an ADH wtty on a refurb (they absolutely did not up through 2 mos. ago), but even if they're not, DO NOT GO WITH THE SONY WTTY. Google it and see how bad the experiences of others have been and note the killers:

    1) It is not Sony, but a company called Servicenet that does the wtty - you never deal with Sony on it once it's purchased, AFAIK.

    2) At their sole option, they can replace a broken Z with virtually any 13" Sony laptop with roughly equivalent config, including an HDD and vastly inferior screen. Square Trade I believe has this in their fine print, but if you google them, this never happens.

    3) As mentioned below - can't emphasize this enough - your "2 year coverage" is over when, a) they do one replacement (again, likely with an inferior model) or, b) they have incurred expense equal to your orig purchase price. Mean that if they (at prices they set) have incurred $500 for a repair, you only have $500 left (again, on a $999 refurb) for repairs or replacement. Since they can't get even a crappy replacement for teh $500, a second repair in this scenario would be a check for $500 and "see ya, wouldn't wanna be ya!"

Sony support sucks and the Sony repair sucks more, because it isn't even Sony - it's worse!

    IMO. :D

So, part of the orig post, below, is modified by my edit, above, but there is some addtl info, so may be worth a skim. Good luck all. Whatever you do, don't trust Sony farther than you can throw them!

It's a judgement call, but I have heard Sony wtty co (a third party, not Sony) is tough to deal with and will only provide repairs up to orig purch price of laptop. (See earlier post by me on this). ST has always been very quick and will let you use any repair facility on their "approved" list, or they will send someone out. Normally, though, they do just give you a full refund. What's cool about that is, like a "totaled" car, you can often buy back your broken Z for a song from ST and then get it repaired using the full refund $ they gave you, often for a net profit. :D though you can't count on that. You can count on them getting your case resolved in 5 days or full payment of your purchase price. Also, I negotiated by phone and got 2 yr coverage for $130, about half Sony's price. Best deal for ADH (I also posted on this earlier, but easier to re-state than find my post, lol) is to get coverage as a 'scheduled item" on homeowners or renters policy, for about $15/yr and it fully covers ADH with no deductible. If you are a student and don't have the base insurance policy, you can put it on parents' policy or, possibly you can buy just scheduled insurance policy. Last possibility: you may be able to purchase the minimum policy to cover all your belongings, in case of fire or theft, for around $100, and it would cover up to $1,500 loss for items like computers per event, but not ADH, only theft/fire, but once you have that base policy, you can add computers, cameras, etc. for about 1.5% of replacement cost per year - eg, $1,000 Sony Z refurb costs $15/yr for ADH, A little extra work, but very much worth it, especially if you own several items worth getting the ADH coverage for. They don't have to be new, they can be any age, and you get "replacement cost" coverage as long as you supply an original bill of sale or an appraisal.

Well I think you make a solid point! I will def. try to get into Square Trade and cancel my Sony Warranty (I hope thats possible) after I am sure I'm keeping this beauty.

Coming to the "keeping" point, fan noise: There def. is some of it, but I really need to switch everything off in my house, the PC, the AC, the exhaust, to hear it well. Else I have to put the vent next to my ear. Then I hear the whirrr. Is it normal?

yeah its normal - mine is the same, i don't notice the noise on light daily usage. When the laptop is on cpu/gpu load (working hard)...it def. gets pretty loud. but that is normal also.

FYI - im going to call squaretrade this weekend and try to get a good deal..wish me luck..

Maybe you can also barter with them for two peoples' laptops? Maybe we can get it lower that way :)

It is almost comical at this point how many Z sub 1K deals I have missed over the last 12 months. I guess I am just not menat to be a Z owner. Oh to be bother frugal and tech crazed.

I just received my 1390X, and it's a beaut with no apparent physical flaws. :) So, what next? What should I specifically check for? SSD usage, battery wear, etc.? How would I go about doing so?

I finally got my refurb Z and I'm typing on it now :D
I know Z reviews have been done to death, but I'd like to share my experience anyway.

Seriously, this thing looks new, well, except my lid has a really really long thin scratch that's not visible unless you look at it up close.

The WEI's are all impressive, at sixes and sevens, except for the RAM, which stands at 5.9. I'll upgrade this to 8GB soon.

The textured metallic brush on the body is really nice. I prefer black but silver is really nice, too. The body, even though light, feels solid to the touch. The blended cylinder form, the convergent lines, and the dual-plate design definitely makes this thing a beauty.

The keys are nice to type on, with sufficient travel (unlike Portege r385's). Many of the keys are stiff, perhaps because they are still new. I wish the home/end/pgup/pgdn get their own keys though. The backlit works well. When I press on the sensor they turn on in a couple seconds.

Hard drive space at boot up comes in at 76 GB or so. I plan to remove most of the bundled software. Boot up is pretty fast, exactly what you'd expect from a 0-raided dual SSD configuration. I shall get a 32 GB memory card and insert it in permanently. I'll install programs and what not but leave sufficient space for the raid controller to do its own garbage collection or whatever. Any data that requires constant modification, I'll place them in external storage. I plan to install L4D2, NFS Pursuit 2010, Visual Studio 2010, Photoshop, Office 2010, and Matlab on this thing. I'll be using this for coding and drawing (hook up a wacom tablet). The high resolution should help me when photoshoping my artworks.

This thing is quiet unless you do cpu intensive things, like playing games, or updating the machine, in which case the fan revs up very fast and loud. The vent gets really hot, too.

The screen is wonderful, especially at full brightness. Colors are saturated and pretty. Hardly any imperfections on the screen. I however value battery life so I'll have the brightness at lowest level. It's semi-matte so there's some reflection for sure.

I don't know how long the battery lasts given my usage scenario. It dropped from 97 to 90 percent after 14 mins. Battery life estimation is more of an art than science, but if we extrapolate this I think I'll get 3 hrs and 20 mins from a full charge (stamina, lowest brightness, wifi on, lowest nonzero speaker volume, normal websurfing). Windows estimated 5 hr 43 mins with 90% though.

Trackpad may seem small, but it's not to the point where it's unbearable. It takes two swipes to travel 90% of the screen, either horizontally or vertically. The left and right clicks are just nice, unlike SA's, which are a little stiff.

In terms of weight, it's pretty light, lighter than SA (you can tell). I can hold it with one hand, but I want to take extra good care with this Z so I better not stress it in any way.

Screen hinge seems solid, unlike SA's, which wobbles if you move the screen. The lid flexes when you move it, but that's ok. It's not like I plan to bludgeon someone with this thing anyway.

Some people complained that Z's battery rattles. That's not the case here. Everything feels solidly attached.

Have not tested the webcam, but I'm ok with any webcam as long as they work and the colors are sort of ok.

And oh, battery dropped to 86% now, and it's been 35 mins since 97%. I reckon normal typing (without surfing, just wifi on) should translate to 30mins/10%, or about 5 hrs of usage with full charge.

All in all, I think I got a good solid machine for a fraction of the price. Thanks to you all; otherwise I wouldn't have pulled the trigger and ordered this.

    J'aime mon Z <3

i agree with you tehsupermeowmeow. good review.

Just wondering, did you notice very light diagonal lines on the screen? you have to be close and really look for them. i think they are easier to see on white background with full brightness. just wondering...i think its pretty normal on all Zs. I noticed them on mine, that's why im asking if you did also.

Nope. I turned on full brightness and looked real hard and real close at white background, and all I saw was a couple dirt particles here and there.

How is it suppose to look like?

ah it's hard to explain. no worries, its just something that no one notices unless someone points it out. it's pretty hard to see..very faint..also, there is a chance it might develop later on, if you don't see it now. nothing to worry about, just something noticed on my screen.

ah. I think I see it. I'm not sure if one would call this something that develops...I suspect it's just Moiré pattern. It's perhaps made more prominent by the denser than usual transistors on the screen. Z screen has pretty high resolution for a 13" after all.

I'm not in the slightest bothered by it :)

requiem, I presume you know a lot more about this than I do. So I plan to upgrade the RAM to 8GB using two 4GB modules. I remember reading somewhere we can only use 1066MHz ones? Or can we use higher frequency ones?

And how hard is it to upgrade RAM on a Z? I assume the hatch on the bottom leads me directly to the RAM modules?

From what i remember i believe it was DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) ram. But i'd google some more to double check. Just FYI, PC3 10666 = PC3 10600...different name, same specs. These are the 2 that i found that i was thinking of buying:

    Newegg.com - G.SKILL 4GB 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600) Laptop Memory Model F3-10600CL9S-4GBSQ

    Newegg.com - G.SKILL 4GB 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Laptop Memory Model F3-10666CL9S-4GBSQ

There was a post somewhere that showed how to upgrade the RAM on Vaio Z....can't find it...but from what i recall.. it was just that hatch at the bottom, unscrew and open it up, plug in new ram..and your done.
