**Probably US residents may not be able to ask my question since different laws. But still suggest an answer please :D

    Hey guys and gals,
I've been tangled between manufacturer and retailer about getting a replacement/refund for my faulty FZ laptop.

    Right...

    - There is a buzzing noise coming from the screen when the brightness is lowered. I created a case on sony vaio e-support, they ran me through a number of procedures which failed to work and then suggested me to ask the retailer where I purchased it from, to give me a replacement (sonycentre)
    - I went to sonycentre, however they said I'm dealing with the wrong people about getting a replacement. They said that I should talk to vaio about the fault issue.
    - I then rang them today (sonycentre, retailer) asking for a refund. But then again, they said I should talk to sony vaio.
    - I rang sony vaio today, and they said they can only offer a repair, not replacement. However, they also said that it is part of some legislation that the retailer should exchange my unit within a certain amount of days (at least 28 days) and then the retailer should send the faulty unit to sony vaio. They also say I have a right to get a refund even if the machine isn't faulty. (within 28 days) .

    Who is right?!?!?

    Jam.

Why not set up a conference call with Sony and Sony Centre? Or go to Sony Centre with your cell phone in hand and call Sony from there? Then let the two of THEM hash this out.

You deal with your seller for at least the first month. So if you have any defects, take it up to your seller. He is obliged to repair your unit. How he's going to repare it is his problem (probably sending it back to Sony).

In the first month, it's a direct exchange for a new unit where you bought it.

    Right, ok then.
Its actually exactly 1 month from when I bought my laptop, today, however I have proof from sony vaio that I reported the fault only 7 days after I made the purchase.

Imo, I think the retailers in the wrong. I may get consumer direct to help on this case, as I really considering a refund, not another vaio.

I don't think this is the case for Sony electronics.

Most retailer post disclaimers that they will NOT take return or exchange for defective Sony electronic even its with in the period of their return policy. No, retailer didn't make this rule.. Sony did

All exchange of defective items must be processed through manufacture (Sony).

The law (in The Netherlands at least) says different. YES, defective items must be processed through the manufacturer. BUT, it's up to the dealer to take responsibility for this. You deal with a seller, not with Sony. You buy from a seller, not from Sony. You have at least (again, in The Netherlands,) a 1 year warranty from the seller. Do not directly assume that what retailers say is valid.

    This should answer your question...

There you go, thats UK law!! Print it off and show it to the retailer, and tell them you WONT leave without a refund or replacement (whatever you want), and if they wont give it to you, tell the manager you want him to sign a piece of paper saying the their policy violates your consumer rights, and that you will be taking it to trading standards!

Also tell them you will contact your credit card company (if you paid by credit card), and that they will be in touch! If you do this, things WILL go your way!

Hey guys, I had a fat go at Sony Centre's 'boss' (the retailer) and I've got a replacement!! Should be getting it on the weekend.

Btw, I was gonna tell them about the sales of goods act but throught I might as well complain that the lack of good support etc. If, when I go to pick up the laptop from my local sony centre and I have trouble getting a replacement, then I shall show the various statements that they are breaching, off the sales of goods act.

    Hi,
My replacement FZ still has some screen noise on lower brightness levels but don't think its as loud as my old FZ. I personally think its normal. I'd rather have a superb screen which the FZ has and not be bothered about a small buzz. Although if it is pretty loud, i.e. can be heard over the fan, then return it. I had another problem with my old FZ anyway - the left touchpad click button would not respond at times.

Btw, where did u get your FZ21s from?

    Jam.
