    First post, yay!

Just got me the SVS15113FXB - wickedly sleek machine! I'm really happy with it coming from a Gateway FX (17 inch 9 pounder -without the brick).
The Vaio speakers are laughable, but i'm nitpicking.

My rather annoying situation comes up when i plug in my 1TB USB3 Buffalo Mini-station to either of the two USB3 ports. The drive spins up and will show its contents - but after a minute or so it would just disappear. I can feel the drive still spinning, but its not showing up on Windows.

Plugging the same drive into the USB2 port gets it working with no issues.

I've also tried a different drive - a 500GB Seagate Go Flex (Portable) on the USB3 ports and that works properly.

So, more than suggestions to upgrade/re-install the chipset/bios/usb drivers (which I've tried!), I would appreciate if anyone could confirm that they've gotten their portable 1TB USB3 drives working on the USB3 ports.

I'd really like to know if the Vaio outputs enough juice to power more than a 500GB drive on the USB3 port - and why the USB2 port doesn't seem to have any trouble.

    Very much obliged!

I'm using a Toshiba 1TB USB3.0 External on my USB3.0 ports, and have no issue whatsoever.

That's the portable one, right? No external power?

Blast it, must be my drive (USB3 interface?).

    Thanks for letting me know.

I don't have a 1 TB disk, but I do notice that USB2/USB3 ports are different in this respect, as a couple of devices I have are not even recognized when I plug them in the USB3 port and work flawlessly in the USB2 ports. So the backwards compatibility somehow is not 100%.

    ^ Which really sucks.

I'm going look for another laptop with USB3 ports to test my 1TB drive. The drive's still under warranty, but i really hope it's just a Vaio USB driver issue as a Buffalo replacement takes upwards of a week..

    So how did it go?

I am currently looking for a fast 7200rpm 3.5" external drive for my S15 and could use any information on USB 3.0 compatibility.

How did it go? Did you manage to find a solution? I have exactly the same problem but with an external 512 SSD connected to usb 3.0 on my vaio z2.

Really sorry, I completely forgot about this thread. Turned out that the external drive was faulty. Got a replacement from the store and the new one works.
