USB 3.0->Display Port Adapter - Finally a way to get 2560x1600 from Vaio Z?

I just came accross this: https://intrl.startech.com/AV/USB-V...rd-Multi-Monitor-Adapter-2560x1600~USB32DPPRO

Has anyone used anything like this?

As most of you know, one of the few major pain points of the VAIO Z (and most other high-end windows laptops) is that their lack of a DisplayPort means there has not been any way to drive a large high-res monitor (i.e. any modern 30" monitor) at full resolution from the notebook. For me personally, this has been the sole reason I have not invested in a VAIO Z over the past few years.

USB 3.0 does seem capable of delivering the bandwidth necessary to power a DisplayPort and given that the Vaio Z does have a free USB 3.0 slot, it seems the adapter I linked to above could finally be the solution many have been waiting for.

Has anyone tried something like this yet?

If even looks like this could be paired with something like this: Amazon.com: Accell B087B-007B DisplayPort/Mini DisplayPort to DVI-D Dual-Link Adapter with 3D Support: Electronics to get use older 30" monitors that only have dual-link DVI inputs (like mine unfortunately).

    Thoughts?

This indeed looks very promising, here's one recent review on Amazon confirming the product will work exactly as I outlined above: Amazon.com: Customer Reviews: StarTech.com USB 3.0 to DisplayPort 2560 x 1600 External Video Card Multi Monitor Adapter (USB32DPPRO)

Another interesting question - would the USB 3.0->DisplayPort adapter work via the USB 3.0 port on the Power Media Dock? If so, this would truly be ideal, potentially allowing multiple 1080p displays plus a 30" to be powered via the PMD.

I think the DisplayLink technology is the same but I wonder if this device would work a bit better since it's purpose-built solely for converting to DisplayPort for one high-res source rather than a hub that does many different things.

Hopefully someone here with a Vaio Z (or any other laptop for that matter) can test this out with a 30" to see if it works.

You'll need a fairly new VAIO Z. One with USB 3.0 ports. ;)

Is this your personal setup? If so, can you share any details about performance? Do you notice anything weird or detrimental about the USB->Display Port conversion? Are you connecting via the PMD USB 3.0 ports or the port directly on the laptop itself?

Thanks in advance for any additional insights you can share.

I'm running on a Vaio Z series SVZ131190 with the power media dock. I have the SIIG JU-DP0011-S1 USB 3.0 to DisplayPort adapter driving a ViewSonic VP2770-LED 256x1440 monitor and it works quite well for my work in software development. I should also mention that up to 6 of the JU-DP0011-S1 devices can be plugged into a single computer. I haven't tried more than one yet but am planning to buy a few more and a few more monitors. The adapter can drive up to a 2560x1600 monitor.

Have you tried playing HD videos through the adaptor? If it's smooth, does it eat up a lot of CPU resources / loud fan noise? thanks

I have tried this StarTech.com USB 3.0 to DisplayPort 2560 x 1600 External Video Card Multi Monitor Adapter (USB32DPPRO), coupled with this StarTech.com DP2DVID DisplayPort to DVI Dual Link Active Converter - USB Powered...to power my dual DVI-D Dell 2560 x1600 monitor on a vaio S.

I work on the web and do multiple mouse clicks and moves in short time. I found the mouse had a slight lag enough to make me miss my mark when trying to change tabs etc. It works pretty darn good for video and casual web browsing though. I returned both products because it was just a tad slow for what I wanted. I find out later that USB 3.0 is slower than the needed bandwidth to power that monitor, but software internal to the card helped make it "seem" fast enough.

I have done a ton of research about this and I have found theoretically that HDMI 1.3 or HDMI 1.4 , which most new computers have, will power the 2560 x1600 monitor. I just need to get the correct cables that has hdmi 1.3 and dual dvi-d and change custom resolutions in display adapter. I have read that others have powered a 2560 x 1600 monitor through HDMI 1.3, but they all had HDMI connection on their monitor as well. So we will see how it goes :)

I've tried this adapter with an Apple LED Cinema Display 27" and it does NOT work. Looks to be missing the full protocol to turn on the monitor from sleep mode. Yes, I've tried the latest firmware.

The support is pathetic. They were quite clueless if this monitor would work or not. They told me to wait for the latest firmware which *may* fix the problem, and of course it did not.

Anyone gotten this to work with a Cinema Display, please let reply... Thanks.

I know this is old thread, but I just bought Startech's USB32DPPRO and connected it to a DP2MDPMF6IN display port to mini displayport adapter. It is successfully driving an apple 27" Cinema Display. I was able to use it over USB 2.0 (not 3.0) and it still had adequate performance for web browsing and viewing youtube in a small window. I imagine it might be even better over USB 3.0.

You could try it with an ExpressCard USB 3.0 adapter.
