If you like to experiment with Linux, I rfecommend you try Ubuntu 7.04. I just installed the March 20 daily build (the beta comes out on the 23rd).

Wired and wireless netowrking work, including wpa on wireless.

Function keys for mute, volume, brightness and hibernate work, the others, and the S keys appear to do nothing.

The flash reader on the right side of the keyboard works, the memory stick reader does not.

Power management works. If you have tried Linux before, you realize what a bigh deal this issue is.

Note that I installed in stamina mode. There is a way to get both video adaptors to work, but that is not important to me at the moment.

Camera, fingerprint reader, TPM and wireless modem do not work. Of these only the fingerprint reader is relatively important. Ther is package "thinkfinger" which is supposed to get the fingerprint reader going, but I have not have time to play with it. It has to be compiled.

Codecs and flash install automatically now.

    Overall I am very impressed.

Although this is definitely an improvement, I don't consider things not working to be impressive.

Rather stick with Vista where every single thing on the notebook works then use Feisty and make compromises...but that's just me. Once every single thing works in Linux, I'll take another look.

Mobilehavoc, you just have such an attitude. Linux runs so much faster than Vista it is amazing. Plus freedom from malware and all the nonsense security applications Windows needs to keep the bad stuff out. All I knnow is when I run Vista it looks pretty, but within 15 minutes I am sick of it.

Someone tell me why I would need to get the cellular modem working when I don't have it activated, or why the S keys are so important. I suppose the camera would be nice for some folks, but I don't use that either. TPM just plain scares me for now. The only thing I need to get working is the fingerprint reader and I will be in 7th heaven.

Besides all this stuff worked right after the installation. No hunting for drivers and experimenting. It must have taken me 5 repeats to get a good working Vista installation (without the cellular modem or TPM enabled) and even then there were annoying bugs. This isn't even the final 7.04 and I like it better than Windows.

The only way I will ever buy a copy of Vista is pre installed on a notebook that is not available bare.

You're misunderstanding me...I have no attitude...I just have the belief that I..as in me...should decide which features in my notebook I want to use or not...if I feel like it I want to be able to use very feature as important or retarded as it may sound, because guess what it's part of the price I paid for it right?

So yes, you may never use the things that DO NOT WORK in Linux but you don't really have a choice. I may decide tomorrow that I want to try the 30-day trial of the EDGE modem or use TPM or whatever and I CAN.

    That's the difference.

    Mh-

So, you are saying that the theoretical avialability of features is important to you. Perhaps I prefer the actual performance of the OS in other areas. Oddly enough, I did not even know the SZ had a TPM when I bought it. As for the cellular modem, I considered it to be something I did not need, but was thrown into the package. For me the SZ was attractive due to its 2 gigs of memory, 2 ghz processor, small size, light weight and superior construction.
