I recently bought a sony Vaio CR, and wanted to uninstall some of the bloatwear on it since it was taking up quite a bit of space. I uninstalled the Sonic program, but for some reason I ended up with less free space. I went from about 150GB of 178 GB free to having 147GB free. Does anyone know why this would have happened? Also is there a list of all the programs that you don't need anywhere? I'm not all that good at computer stuff, so I'm not entirely sure what I need and what I don't.

And also, the computer came with Ms powerpoint/word/excel on it. Are these just 60 day trial type things?

    Thanks! :)

I'm not sure why you had less space. You could provide us with a list of all the software that's installed on your computer which you think you might not need. Then we might be able to help you out more.

As for MS Office, do you remember purchasing it when it came with your computer? If not, I'm guessing it's a trial.

Okay, so here's what I've got that I'm not sure about:

    Adobe Lifecycle Designer 8.0
    VAIO musicbox
    Windows meeting space
    Windows movie maker
    Windows photo gallery
    Word pad
    Click to DVD
    Sync Centre
    Intervideo WinDVD
    VAIO video and photo suite

And since the office stuff is just a trial- a while back I bought all the 2007 stuff for another computer in the house, and was allowed to use them for up to 3 computers. I still have 1 left, so would it be better to just uninstall the trials and then upload that?

Adobe Lifecycle Designer 8.0 - I don't think you'll ever need this software if you're a casual computer user.

VAIO musicbox - I probably wouldn't ever use it since I have iTunes and WMP. You might want to experiment with it though.

Windows meeting space, windows movie maker, windows photo gallery - KEEP! You can use these software to create your original movie, manage your photos... Just keep every software that's part of Vista. You might never know when you'll need it.

Word pad - KEEP! Necessary for Windows to function.

Click to DVD - Windows movie maker can do what this does. As with the Vaio music box you may want to experiment with it to see if you like it or not.

Sync Centre - KEEP! Again, part of Vista. Do not remove.

Intervideo WinDVD - Unless you have Windows Vista Home Premium or Ultimate, you need this software to watch DVDs. If you do have Home Premium or Ultimate you can just use WMP.

VAIO video and photo suite - Windows Movie Maker and Windows Photo Gallery can do what this does. Again, you may want to experiment with it.

It may be because System Restore that took a snapshot of your hard drive before you uninstalled the Sonic Program. That's why you end up with less space than before.

BTW: the best way to get rid of the bloatware is to reformat, reinstall just the OS, the drivers and the utilities you need. Sony put too much bloatware in their system that simply uninstalling is not good enough. Sony could be a pain though when it comes to clean install. Some of the drivers may not be available for clean install. It took me quite a bit of research to clean install my Sony SZ and makes everything works properly.
