I ordered my Sony SZ140 with XP Home since I had a copy of XP Pro sitting around just waiting for a nice home (plus, clean installs are much nicer, anyway.) I've been able to restore every single driver and feature to my liking except for the HDD protection utility (Sony G-Sensor.)

Today I called Sony tech support asking how on earth I could install the utility on the clean Windows install (since the driver that they install from the recovery DVD apparently does nothing.) Guess what... it's not supported. They offer no way to install the utility outside of their clean factory image. Needless to say I'm mad, and this really draws into question how much support Sony will be willing to give to Vista driver upgrades when they won't support current versions. (Will the TPM work? That's anybody's guess.)

I love this little guy. I actually love the keyboard (and so does everyone at my work - go figure.) However, I think this one's going back.

But first - has anyone found a way to install the HDD Protection utility outside of Sony's image?

i still haven't found a way to install the hdd protection drivers to work, been playing with it for about a week already with my xp pro clean install.

javier, to see if your hdd protection work, just bounce the laptop a lil bit when it's on and a warning will pop up.

You can change the sensitivity by going to Vaio Central -> Security and changing the drive options in there. Pretty cool little x,y,z axis functionality. :)

Still, the fact that you can't install it over a clean install is just plain stupid. I'm going to keep messing with a copy I've grabbed from a clean install to see if I can't transplant it.

Wow, thanks. So the only way to access the settings for the HDD protection are to shake the laptop?!? Would software access been too much to ask of Sony?!?
