OK, so I just got mine sz640 with only one gig of ram.

I am not sure about the spec. for sony, so correct me if I am wrong:

    200 PIN DDR2 SO-DIMM.
    Speed
    DDR2 400 (PC2 3200)
    DDR2 533 (PC2 4200)
    DDR2 667 (PC2 5300)
    DDR2 667 (PC2 5400)
    DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)

    What's the diffrenrece between PC2 5300 and 5400?
can I get ddr2 800, if my other stick has 667?

The difference between 5300 and 5400 is simply the name, they are exactly the same. Just depends on whether the manufacturer rounds down to 5300, or up to 5400.

You can put in ddr2 800 in there, but it will be downclocked to 667MHz, so there's no point in getting that.

Just stick with another dimm of 667MHz ram.

Also take a look at the Hot ram deals thread for great prices on DDR2-667 ram.

what are your opinions about the performance improvement from 2->4gb of ram on vista -- is it appreciable

(i know x86 can only see 3.2gb of it)

    thanks everyone for reply.

I am confused now. Isn't the new sz6' come with new Santa Rosa processor which support 800??
BTW, can I run I stick with 677 and the other one with 800?

No, santa rosa supports 800MHz ram, but that doesn't mean it will run at 800.

If you run a 667 stick with a 800 one, then the 800 stick will downclock to 667 to match the other one.

Even if you buy 2 800 sticks, they will both downclock to 667 no matter what.

adinu, curious how you know this, as the GM965 express does support DDR26400 (800mhz). Did you try it and if so, do you know what the specs were for the modules you used? I'm wondering if it's the Sony BIOS doesn't support this (and something that might be fixed in a later upgrade).

I don't have first hand experience with this, but I read and researched. All the information I got showed that while ddr2 800MHz is accepted, the modules will only run at a max speed of 667MHz.

Ask around, or search the forums and you will see plenty of posts regarding this issue.
